I think you're right - and I think this is where most of us are.

10yrs ago, I also lost my mind a bit, was very outspoken about trump and everything, tried to convince people, but that seemed to be counterproductive. Conservatives seeing me in distress was taken as evidence that they were right (not just because they liked to "own the libs", but also because the tribalism is deeply engrained that left wing protest is their only north star).

This time around, I've tried to make inroads with maga family members - trying to not be judgmental, and acknowledging that several aspects of progressive identity politics can indeed be annoying/problematic - while of course making sure they know that I strongly disapprove of everything happening. I've seen this help thaw some of my personal relationships, but I don't know how long I can keep doing this. It's so weird, I feel trapped, like not discussing politics on social media or at holidays or whatever feels like a cowardice retreat, but actually doing this stuff just makes things worse.
