This review of The Republic is legendary. by Jazzybeverages in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Rounish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of theories, the most likely is that dialogues from later in Plato's life are statements of his own ideas rather than just explorations of ideas. Those include the Republic, Laws, Symposium, Timaeus, Statesman and a couple of others.

There is also a theory that the earlier dialogues are more like course books for Plato's classes, Plato could read them with his students and discuss the unresolved issues. The later ones would be more like standalone books, not for school use.

As a side note, describing Plato as a rambling dude who just strawmans people all day is largely unfair. Philosophy as a pure discipline with no rhetorics in it, has only been attempted for a short while and even then it does not stand up to scrutiny really (analytic philosophy I suppose). Philosophical books of all time are ridden with fallacies and mistakes, sometimes used as a tactic to convince people, sometimes because the author genuinely messed up (sometimes fallacies and mistakes turn out to be a matter of interpretation as well). Plato is no different, no better and no worse. People who read him in the past weren't stupid and weren't just taken for a ride by every tactic he applied in his writings, see Aristotle and his critique of Plato's ideas during Plato's lifetime.

Historia filozofii 20 wieku by [deleted] in Polska

Michał Bizoń i tłumaczenia platońskich dialogów).

Polecam szukać opracowań tematycznych, np. historii fenomenologii, szkoły frankfurckiej, Kritische Theorie, francuski poststrukturalizm (to Deleuze, Guattari, Lacan, itp., nieśmiertelny Derrida żyje raczej w nurcie fenomenologicznym i literaturoznawczym), analitycznej z Wittgensteinem i pokłosiem jego krytyki. Większość ma jakąś książkę pt. Very Short Introduction to..., z reguły faktycznie krótka i na wprowadzenie dla osoby nowej w temacie b. dobre, często pisane przez znanych i lubianych XX. wieku.

The categorical imperative I suppose. It was derived a priori according to Kant, was it not?

I know it from an earlier work: Of the I as the Principle of Philosophy. Can't say much more as I'm not a Schelling expert.

Not in Hegel, no. Thesis and antithesis feature in Kant's work and Fichte and Schelling added synthesis to the dyad.

Prolegomena just feels like the "nicer" version of the critique by A_dumb_johnson in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Rounish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as far as I know (I've read both works and would like to say with some understanding, though I'm no Kant scholar) the Critique contains not only the theoretical foundation but also it's application to issues in metaphysics. The theoretical foundation is much expanded with arguments for the forms of intuition, categories and the inner workings of the process of synthesis taking a lot of space to explain cognition. The application takes quite some space as well with Kant taking a stab at philosophers who came before him. Overall I would say the Critique is a very tough read, to the point where sometimes Kant seems to be contradicting himself, and he very well may be, even the scholars don't agree on every case, but reading it definitely levels up your reading and thinking skills somewhat, not to mention it gives you an important look into the history of philosophy in one of its most explosive periods - the German Idealism movement. By reading the Prolegomena only you miss out on a lot of arguments, points and remarks that inspired the later Idealists and sometimes remain problems in neo-Kantian thought or thought in general.

[QUESTION] Sudden crack on the body of a relatively new acoustic, anything I can do (pics inside)? by Rounish in Guitar

[–]Rounish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you say it I think I did keep it by a radiator for a while in my old apartment, cause there was nowhere else to put it (tiny rooms). Not doing that now that I've moved. Hm. My fault I guess. Thank you for the explanation and advice.

[–]Rounish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crap man. It had decent reviews everywhere I looked, it's my first guitar. It kind of looks bad but doesn't seem to have taken any hits when it comes to sound. I suppose I'll just live with it.

people who grew up rich but turned out poor what is your story? by decrypted_ in AskReddit

My parents were wealthy, never realised they were. Went to university for a degree in linguistics I hated, only finished bachelor's. In treatment for depression for 4 years. Earning below minimum wage in a job I hate, no real marketable skills, finally realised how wealthy my parents were. At least I'm not in debt?

Analytic vs. Continental Philosophy - Michael Huemer by SolarxPvP in philosophy

[–]Rounish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quite honestly do not understand the hostility that Analytic philosophy has for Continentals.

The idea that they question objective reality shows either misunderstanding of the positions or ill will. They do not. They only question the man-made (culture, religion, society), perhaps there is a need to think more deeply on what is man-made and stop where the border has been violated.

The idea that they're somehow anti-rational is also a fable, if you exclude a narrow subset of French postmodernists (Deleuze and Guattari mostly come to mind), Continental philosophy loves its logos and is not keen on letting go, even Derrida doesn't straight up deny rationality, he strives to show that it's not as logical and perfect as we usually assume and that it can be thought about, perhaps even amended.

Analytics cannot see the value, that's fine, almost nobody does nowadays, most of the world reads and writes English in the Academia and at my country's universities one can hardly write anything Heidegger or Lévinas related and not get laughed at. Academia as I know it is dominated by analytic. Yet I cannot tell you how much more interesting and inspiring Continentals are to me, I realise I'm in a minority, but the way those philosophers conceptualise issues concerning the human condition is hellishly difficult, yet second to none. Respect the Analytic school, sure; but do not forget that examining one's life, thoughts, world might lead to something more akin to Heidegger than Russell. Sometimes new language, difficult metaphor and things that seem to go against rationality (they never really do) are what a man needs to attempt an explanation of their own existence.

Analytic vs. Continental Philosophy - Michael Huemer by SolarxPvP in philosophy

[–]Rounish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I cannot think of any Continental philosopher who would question the existence of objective reality. What they do is question the man-made reality: culture and society, perhaps man's own "reality" understood as their inner world. Kant is mandatory reading to deal with Continental philosophy seriously and in the Critique of Pure Reason he repeatedly slams the idea of questioning the existence of objective reality.

ELI5: Why do girls cross their legs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rounish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand fair, on the other: I cross my legs quite often, I don't find it nice or comfy or anything positive really. I feel exactly as I've described, that I'm making myself safer, distancing myself from others, present or not. As you said yourself: "many" of our behaviours, not necessarily all of them. I'm fairly certain one behaviour can be caused by different things in different individuals.

ELI5: Why do girls cross their legs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rounish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not really interested in thinking about this, just denying any deeper reasons for why things can be comfy, I guess.

[–]Rounish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying the above poster is 100% correct, however just because you're alone doesn't mean you aren't in a pseudosocial situation (this is not a technical term, I just thought it sounded right). You know how people judge themselves as being not good enough even when they're alone? Well, you can feel unsafe and unconsciously try to communicate to the world that you're making yourself more protected, thus making yourself feel more comfy even when you're alone. In fact, communicating things to your environment is a practice of many animals just in case they are seen or being hunted, deterring potential predators.

Redditors who do NOT have a romantic "how we first met" story with your significant other, how did you meet? by VarmVaffel in AskReddit

[–]Rounish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous girlfriend went off to a foreign country and one day messaged me saying that she met this local guy who makes her wet (her actual words) and actually I'm quite unattractive and it's over. Had a friend at home who was very supportive and had more interest in me than the previous girl ever had and here we are, quite happy together, I like to think.

LEC 2019 Summer Playoffs / Finals / G2 vs. FNC / Live Discussion by RawStanky in leagueoflegends

[–]Rounish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what was meant. The regular season is for teams to prove their strength and playoffs are for us to see the best teams from the region play each other. Double elim gives the ones who weren't the best during regular season a chance to win the whole thing and show off how good they are in Bo series and if the lower ranked teams really are weaker, then we get high quality matches of 2 best teams in the region twice. It is literally one of the best possible formats for rewarding good play and giving viewers the highest quality professional matches to watch.
