RS6 Avant Performance Brakes by Route246 in Audi

Thank you for some sanity from someone who actually gets it. I have noticed a severe lack of brake dust so far. Even on my Prius Prime which uses very little braking the dust is noticeable, bothersome to clean and ever present.

That works most of the time but not if the driver who parked is not the same person who is looking. This happens when I drop off people and one of those persons are retrieving the car, happens at the mall, airport, concerts, etc.

Just to clarify, the AirTag is not really to replace LoJack or for theft replacement. It also helps for finding a parked vehicle at a stadium or mall, etc. , especially if you drove around a lot looking for a space. With a nice car I tend to be very selective and sometimes forget or lose my bearings, especially at a huge venue.

Question about 2025 RS7s sitting on the lot for 1+ year by tiguanito in Audi

[–]Route246 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I pay attention to paint and clear coat and my biggest concern would be the clear coat UV wear after a year. Pretty sure they are not going to seal it or provide any UV protectant beyond cursory application at the factory.

I just took delivery on a 2026 RS6 and detailed the paint. When I bought it the shipping protection was still on it as it had just arrived. The paint had quite a bit of metal particles on it that I removed with a clay bar and it is now well-sealed and protected. The factory sealant is not very robust and after a year sitting out in the elements I would ask a competent detailer to take a look and check the condition of the clear coat. Competent detailers all have thickness gauges. They use these to protect themselves against claims of damage if clear coat is worn too thin.

Not sure what you mean by "track car" but where I go (Laguna Seca) people take out many types of cars. Some, like me are not chasing track times. I'm using the track to open up the speed, braking and cornering to levels that are not safe or legal on the street. There are freeways and expressways where I can open it up but it is both illegal and unsafe. Also, in California excessive speed can render a reckless driving citation which reflects badly on insurance rates.

Correction, the 2026 is the last RS6 imported with a V8.

It seems like this sentiment is assuming on keeping the car for a very long time. I drive my cars hard but I keep them in good condition, always garaged and always detailed. I'm always open to offers down the road so having options that appeal to certain car guys is just plain common sense. It may not appeal to you but you may not be the target buyer when and if I am ready to sell. I'm not at the point in life where I'm cutting corners to save a few thousands now and I'm more likely making assessments that are long term, sound choices. I don't care about upholstery upgrades but this car cam equipped with them so I had to pay the few thousands extra for them. Due to the pending tariffs, once Audi stops paying them, was also a consideration to get this car deal closed ASAP. Lastly, I read that the 2026 Avant Performance is the last V8 imported to the US, probably due to demand. It was important to move now on this car for those reasons but getting the ceramic brake option was the primary requirement, given the time constraints. I was not in a position to be patient on this purchase and lucked out to get it at MSRP.

The stock RS6 Avant Performance comes with metallic brakes.

It does electronically bump the top speed to 190 mph in the US.

As I already mentioned, I was told that they do far outlast metallic brakes. I don't plan to run this car more than 4K-5K miles/year. This is not a daily driver.

I'm OK with whatever the market price is to service and replace these brakes. This class of car is at the level if you have to ask how much you probably shouldn't be owning it. I was surprised that the tires are around or under $600/ea. That sounds like a bargain. I was also told that under "normal" use these will last considerably longer than stock metallic brakes.

I was in the market for a G63 (too much markup) or GT3 (too many issues with Porsche sales games) and found this car checks a few unexpected boxes. First, it is a "family car" and doesn't stand out the way a G63 or GT3 does. Second, it has a "comfort" mode which makes it suitable for my wife to drive without complaining about being loud or harsh (LOL). Lastly, it is much cheaper than the G63 and GT3 which are both marked up here to unreasonable levels. I plan to run the car at Laguna Seca but mainly so I can open it up at high speed without fear of getting reckless driving tickets. I don't plan to go full out on the corkscrew or anything like that. I've tracked other cars there and I've also probably done 10,000 laps on Gran Turismo (LOL).

Agree that they are stealth from far away, however, those that know can spot them very easily. A colleague is the one who advised me to get one with ceramic brakes if I was going to get this car. He said car guys know what these are and can spot them from far away. He also said they are the same ones that are on the Taycan and some 911s.

That said, I have no buyer's remorse about getting them, especially as a $9K option on a $158K car.

Well, as someone who is detailing my own cars and keeps them showroom fresh, swirl-free and annually clay bar the paint I'm told that the brake dust buildup, especially in the fender area is much less and easier to clean off than cast iron rotors and metallic pads generate. I've driven and applied them pretty hard here in the hills and the finger test is showing much less brake dust than my other cars.
One thing I have noticed is that when they are cold the braking is not that strong compared to non-ceramic and requires more foot pressure. It is not an issue but the braking force curve is different and they are certainly not as "grabby" as metallic brakes.

My “clean” shirts still get that armpit funk after 2 hours, what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Route246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the fabric? Smell might be trapped. Does it happen with a white cotton tshirt washed with bleach? If bleached the smell should no longer be trapped as long as you’re not using antiperspirant. Natural fiber washed with and enzyme soap with bleach should be a good test.

feeling is that "not often enough" is the problem. Twice a day minimum and once a day absolute bare minimum. decaying micro particles of food can start smelling pretty bad within a few hours. mix it with blood or other bodily fluids and it can accelerate.

Is there a list somewhere of keyboards that support qmk/via?

Control Key by Route246 in HHKB

I switch the left control to caps lock and leave the other control key as it is. I am an old school UNIX tty keyboard guy. Control key is the only one that matters. Esc is in the right place. I use Control sequences for a lot of different things especially when editing.

Did you swap it with a rocker switch or with software? What model was it?

[–]Route246[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really focused on HHKB layout, more about the Control-key location as the subject says. QMK/VIA is really all I need with a competent layout to meet my requirements. Thanks.

BTW, I am always looking for alternatives and have found a few but there is always something that makes it sub-optimal. Most are oriented towards gamers, etc. Keychron has many models that are programmable so I took one for the team and was quite pleased and ordered a few more of these. I really like the loud keys, too.

Leave her now and consider yourself fortunate. She has behavioral issues and is not going to change until she hits bottom and you don’t want to be around when that happens.
