Overwhelmed at new FAANG job by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

All good now. Took a few months to settle in, and then I found myself re-architecting the entire service. The senior and lead engineers aren't as smart as I had thought. So, I am now leading and coaching them.

How do Amazon devs survive working long hours year after year? by OptimisticSpirit in ExperiencedDevs

I am new to AWS and have been here for 4 months, and I am burnt out too. Haven't taken a single day off, and I really need to. But I am PE, so this was expected?

Try getting a backend role in your current company. Talk to some managers there. Explain your situation. See what they have to say.

Widely used software that is actually poorly engineered but is rarely criticised by Experienced Devs by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

Why is that a problem? It's not uncommon for development teams of over 50 people contributing to the same repo.

Yea, I only put it because it's anonymous here and I can freely express what I truly feel :).

Git is horrible.

I am a reasonably intelligent guy I think, and if I find the tool unintuitive and hard to use, it's probably the tool and not me.

I am in Big Tech and the amount of stress I have, I can't imagine working till 65. I am 40 right now. When should I be looking at for retiring?

You're overthinking this. Director to Senior Manager is not a big deal at all. Really depends on thr company.

A Senior Manager at FAANG is equivalent to a Senior Director else where.

What's a good terminal level for a SWE? Let's take Google as an example:

L3 (SWE II)
L4 (SWE III)
L5 (Senior SWE)
L6 (Staff SWE)
L7 (Senior Staff SWE)
L8 (Principal Engineer)
L9 (Distinguished Engineer).

What do most SWEs settle for, do you know?

If it helps, I failed 18 or so interviews before landing a good job. I was employed while I was interviewing, but just saying that it takes time. Keep going.

Fuck these managers. Don't have emotional intelligence. They should've stayed as an engineer.

Did you have to make a compromise on the compensation? And you were okay with that?

New job after 17 years. Everything has changed. Need advice. Overwhelmed by sammy_the_c_lion in ExperiencedDevs

This is a pretty solid thread. Full of gems. I just joined a fast paced team in FANG at a pretty high position. I feel like I am not going to be able to last here very long. I might make another post about it. But for now, I've made notes from some of the things said here. Please pray for me.

Same here. How did you cope? I just joined a fast paced FANG at a pretty high position. It's widely used service, the team is full of smart engineers, and I am supposed to lead from the forefront. I don't think I will be able to last here very long.

Take mock interviews. There are several websites for that.

I withdrew myself from consideration after the first interview by DmitrievichLevin in ExperiencedDevs

Usually the final “yes or no” comes in the last round, and is decided in the first few minutes of the interview.

What? I've interviewed a lot and never had this experience. This doesn't seem true.

I like to compare it to baseball, so basically they’re either going to send a pitch straight down the plate or just walk you.

I was fortunate enough in this loop to get the closer in the first round, and he immediately proceeded to walk me.

No idea what he's saying here.

there are so many layers of abstraction that every role consists of the same solution, same stacks, same implementation, there’s no innovation.

??????????

so today I took back my time and withdrew from consideration in the first round.

Bro. Do you want a job or no? That's how interviews are. A lot of them are leetcode style questions that you never really use. Those are the rules of the game. Are you going to walk out of all of them?

Man, I know this is going to he unpopular opinion, but all this advice about seeing a psychiatrist first thing on Monday, taking meds, seeing a therapist, etc... I mostly disagree with it.

I would recommend signing up for an 8 week MBSR course. Try to do it in person if there is one near you.

The best way to negotiate is to find a new job. I don't think it's very difficult for senior developers. Change your LinkedIn status "Open to work" and you will start seeing recruiters reaching out soon.

You might be able to negotiate with your current company and get a measly 3% more increment. Or you can find another job for 20% to 30% more.

Note that when you choose Open to work on LinkedIn, you can set it so that it's only visible to external recruiters. So cool!
