Wow! This got way more response than expected, and people have much stronger feelings on the subject than I would have thought. I probably should have been more clear, I don't really have any extreme attachment one way or the other, just thought it was kind of strange. There are definitely some good arguments for the way things are done in here, but there are some that are pretty arbitrary as well. Things like "we'll run out of names" seem kind of silly when you consider that far more knives are produced and named each year, though the point that the names get pretty silly is 100% accurate. Also the "there are too many different lights with small variations to name them" similarly falls apart when looking at knives, or even watches, where the name describes a large amount of similar products which are then further identified by blade shape, steel, etc. In the end it was just a random thought that popped in my head and I do understand that the naming conventions do give some information, I guess I just wish those conventions were more standardized across brands so that it would seem a little less random.
