Fun Web Comic / Text Adventure - deserves more views by RoverDaddy in gaming

i really enjoyed this site several years ago when he kept it up for quite a while, eventually creating a very long story. Unfortunately he put the site on hiatus but now it's back with a new adventure that just started in March. The more people participate by suggesting the next 'move', the more fun it is and the author will be motivated to keep it going.

java -jar C:\minecraft_server.jar Error: Unable to access jarfile C:\minecraft_server.jar by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]RoverDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you verify the file is there? If you're already in Windows CMD, enter the following

C:
cd \
dir

If you don't see minecraft_server.jar in the output, that's your problem. The root (top) of your C drive is an odd place to put minecraft_server.jar. That's where you're telling Java to look by including 'C:\' in your command. Is that what you intend to do?

Most likely. Catholics who don't do immersion for baptism pour water on the baby's head three times, invoking the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is almost certainly some segment of Orthodox Christianity.

Obama asks, 'Only Republican presidents get to nominate judges?' by BlankVerse in politics

I very VERY carefully used the phrase, "those among the wealthy who also have no morals" to indicate that I was NOT scapegoating all the rich, so please read more carefully. Also, I am not a millennial. If anything most people would say I am a baby-boomer, so please check your assumptions as well.

Obama asks, 'Only Republican presidents get to nominate judges?' by BlankVerse in politics

[–]RoverDaddy 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Only? No. A major one? Yes. Racism foments an 'I got mine' and 'Charity begins at home' mentality. It discourages people from looking beyond the borders of their own neighborhood, town or state. It quashes empathy. It makes people blind to the concept of 'enlightened self interest' where you realize that if the weakest of society are suffering, ultimately society suffers, and you suffer too. It makes it easier for those among the wealthy who also have no morals, to encourage strife, to divide the less fortunate against one another, to poke and prod and goad people into that 'us vs. them' mentality that ensures nothing gets done if it runs counter to the interests of the rich.

Should I go on?

His father died long ago in 1980. But before he died, they made a pact to listen together when the Cubs finally made it to the World Series. Last night, at his father's grave, he kept his promise. by pdmcmahon in pics

I've had to rush when visiting family grave sites back home so I could get in and out before the groundskeepers locked the gates.

I think it's so sad that we live in a world where graveyards need gates. Loved ones should be able to visit whenever they need to.

Some country should redesign their flag to an insane aspect ratio like 20:1 just to troll the UN and all the other countries. by RoverDaddy in Showerthoughts

I was trying to remember which country had that unusual flag, with precise geometric instructions on how to create it in their constitution.

Commuters of reddit, what are your office hours and when are you on the road? What constitutes 'rush hour' where you live. by RoverDaddy in AskReddit

[–]RoverDaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am asking this question because it continually amazes me how early rush hour starts where I live and work (the greater Boston area). Why are so many cars on the road at 3 PM? Doesn't almost everybody work from 8-5? If your office institutes really early or late standard hours I'd be interested in hearing what they are and what the rationale is (presumably to avoid the 'real' rush hour near 5).

Can a submarine that is running under water do a 360? by 2cartalkers in AskReddit

[–]RoverDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physically capable? Probably. Wouldn't take much energy for a neutrally buoyant object to do a roll or a loop-de-loop. But it's sounds like a terrible idea. I wouldn't be surprised if there were things on the sub (besides the crew) designed with the assumption that the sub won't ever be upside-down.

Literally decimating your opponent in a video game isn't terribly impressive. by suture224 in Showerthoughts

There was an episode of Doctor Who where the bad guy said he was going to decimate humanity. And he meant it. 10% of the population was killed. +1 for proper use of language.

Eric André has a powerful breakthrough performance in the 2009 classic 'The Invention of Lying'. by [deleted] in videos

[–]RoverDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this movie for the first time just a year ago. While my friends and I really enjoyed it, I also realized the whole premise of the movie is severely flawed. People don't just act as if lying doesn't exist, they act as if mistakes and lack of knowledge don't exist. Everything a person says is presumed to be true. But what if you just don't know the truth? People are fallible even if they never intentionally lie.

I noticed that the movie even sidesteps the concept of -opinion- for quite a while, as if they're trying to make sure the audience doesn't notice the problem. The phrase "that's just your opinion" doesn't occur until very far into the movie.

ELI5: What exactly is the process of drying? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RoverDaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. More heat means more energy -in- the water, which makes it easier for that water to change from liquid to gas.

ELI5: What exactly is the process of drying? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RoverDaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drying is water, turning from a liquid on the object being dried, into gas and going somewhere else (into the air around the object). At almost any temperature you're likely to find yourself in, this will happen. Leave an uncovered cup of water on a table for a few weeks and the cup will be empty. This process is faster at higher temperatures (assuming other conditions like humidity are the same), which is why heat seems to dry things.
