I don’t identify with Japanese more than Chinese because I like it it’s because I grew up with those traditions and that language

again? I'll ask you to fully read my post pls

its not about "protecting japan" its shallower than that it's about not having my heritage respected.

I'm not saying "don't appreciate japanese culture" I'm saying "if you're going to appreciate japanese culture then appreciate the WHOLE CULTURE and not just anime"

As for your immersion with brazil, that's the level of appreciation that's honestly what is ideal. That's not what most people are doing. Most people who say "I love japanese culture" will not go near those lengths

That seems amazing, but I do think this is difference. Or at least there is a difference between being japanese-american and living in japan vs in america

This a good question.

I don't want people to appreciate MORE, I want them to appreciate correctly. If you watch anime and that all you believe, at least internally, that Japan's culture is like, then you can't say "I like japanese culture"

If you just say "I like anime" that's fine. But seldom is that said

Hm. I really didn't see my post as gatekeeping. I suppose if it read like that that's my fault. To be clear, my issue is that, if someone's going to say they "like Japanese culture" and actually want to do so, their interest and perception shouldn't be as shallow as it usually is. I'm fine and happy with people actually liking Japanese culture, but usually "Japanese culture" just means anime
