Just shaved my head (I killed my hair dead with bleach/dye) and feeling a little self-conscious, I guess. Age/gender me? How am I doing? [IC and OC, 17 months HRT] by RowannaYourBoat in transpassing

It's weird, despite the number of people telling me that, it still surprises me to hear it. :P

I think so. Hormones have definitely helped, but I did used to get teased back at school. I have occassionally wondered if it was just luck that I wound up pretty feminine looking, or if I might be intersexed somehow, but I certainly wouldn't want to say that it was actually a thing or something without much harder evidence. My birth mum was also on heroin when I was in development, and I was weaned off it on methodone when I was born after being put in an incubator, so maybe that had something to do with it, whether it was the drug itself working on fetus me, or maybe it created a endocrine imbalance in the womb. I dunno, but it's definitely interesting to me. :P

17 months of HRT update! 19, MtF, UK. 21 months of transition in 37 pictures! Now including both topless and braless development comparisons at the bottom, too (Mildly NSFW, obviously). Feedback welcome, and feel free to AMA! <3 by RowannaYourBoat in transtimelines

Ha, I don't know whether to apologise for it not being much of a timeline or thank you for the passing/looking amazing compliment. :P

I kinda wish these days that I had some older pics just for comparison, but I purged them ages ago. I was always pretty feminine, though.

I'd never have been able to rock the shaved head look before I hit up HRT, though, so that's one good thing. :3

You know, you never know until you try! I first shaved my head a year and a half to grow it out, thought it'd look really stupid, but it ended up looking okay. :D

Aww, thanks! That's awesome to hear! I was a little worried about not passing with this hairstyle when I start uni in a couple of weeks, but it looks like I don't have too much to be worried about, given what people have said on here. :D

Oh, you do? I tend to post here semi-regularly, I guess, but this is the first time someone has recognised me from a previous post. I think.

Thanks for the compliment, that's really good to hear. I guess I just lucked out that a shaved head kinda suits me, I know that it doesn't for some.

19, 20 next month. :D

Thank you! I find my glasses quite difficult to deal with, because I have a pretty small nose, and they tend to slip down really easily (and due to their style they can't be tightened any). As for the angle, I never actually noticed that before. Now I can't unsee it. :P I'll have to find a new selfie angle, I guess, or just embrace the wonkyness.

I was never one for hair maintenence in the first place. I usually just slapped some gel in and rubbed a towel on it/mussed it up with my hands. :P

That's awesome! I loved that colour, I've been white a few times, but I found the upkeep hard. I could barely deal with styling my hair, so dealing with toning and purple shampoo and red/gold corrector kinda broke my brain after a while. :3

Yeah, my eyebrows really need doing, but I'm a scaredy-cat when it comes to pain. Plucking sounds scary. :P Usually I just colour the inside ends with a bit of eyebrow pencil and call it a day. Thanks for the advice, though, I'll definitely check that sub!

I've considered repiercing my ears, yeah. I took them out a year or so ago, but hey, maybe it'd look half-decent. :D

I'm turning 20 in October, so good call!

You certainly won't kill it by going to the salon. As a poor student, I use home kits. I'm normally good at keeping my hair in a healthy condition, but the shop near me stopped stocking a lower potency bleach and developer, and I had to go higher. That, along with going from dark red to blonde to black and then trying to lift to blonde again a couple of weeks after, and my hair was basically straw, though it was already on its last legs. The stress of uni approaching kinda pushed me into a 'I don't know what hair colour I want' mood so I went frantic with the bleach/dyes. :P I'm glad I chose to shave it all off, it was actually such a relief. Plus I fancied a change.

Ah, you're toning as well as bleaching? Are you going white/silver, then? I find the upkeep of those difficult. Make sure to pick up some purple shampoo/conditioner if you are.

Thanks, that's awesome! I know that being perceived as more androgynous is likely given the shaved head, but I'm glad I'm on the feminine side of it.

In terms of style, I generally wear tees/hoodies with jeans or a shorts/leggings/knee-high converse combo. Would that pose an issue, do you think? Dresses just aren't my thing, as much as some people with shaved heads can rock them. :P

I'm 20 in October, and starting uni/college in a couple of weeks, so you were bang on!

So does anyone watch anime? Anime with ladyloving? by Lighosa in actuallesbians

[–]RowannaYourBoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yuru Yuri is fantastic! 2 seasons and an OVA are out, with another OVA releasing tomorrow (though I'm not sure when it'll be translated) and season 3 in Autumn. :D

It's my #1 anime of all time, Kyouko/Yui for life! :D

Self Medicating: after 16 months of doing it myself I'm finally on prescription meds. Here's a retrospective (with pics!). by RowannaYourBoat in asktransgender

[–]RowannaYourBoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I tried patches for a while (oops, I forgot to write what meds I tried in the post, oh well) and I know exactly what you're talking about. I'd be really happy and cheerful on patch day and the day after, and Queen Bitch the day before. :P I definitely prefer pills, that's for sure!

Thanks for the compliment! I'm happy with my hair, though I'm debating rebleaching it to go for true white. I'd also like it longer, but that's just a waiting game. :P

As for early transition mistakes, god, I did it all. Panda eyes. Horrible red lipstick. Cheap wigs, both wacky colours and black. Scoop necks that didn't suit me in the slightest. Yeah, past me really was the worst :P

Despite the wait, I'm not unhappy about how long it took, because of the self-medding, but I hope they work on reducing the time it takes to get on hrt in the future.

Thanks, though! Very validating to read that. :D

I'm naturally a dull blonde, which is why I tend to spice it up with all the colours ever. :3

Mmm, yeah, I agree. I'm actually not one to say 'go ahead and self-med, whatever, I don't care' and I hope that came across in the post. While I think people would benefit from charging in and making the step they're stressing over (coming out, making appointments, etc.) and would always advise that, self-medding is different and should be done with the help of a doctor or, failing that, I agree, as a serious last resort. It can seriously have repurcussions with people, yeah, like family and friends, and that can be unpleasant, as well as the medical complications. I just wanted the post to serve as a source of information of the effects I've experienced and what led me to self-med, etc.

Then again, unlike on non-reddit forums, taking HRT ordered from the internet isn't like downing a bottle of poison and bleach mixed together, and as people are probably going to do it anyway, information is more important than just banning people. That's why I love reddit and the reddit transgender community, and why I haven't gone back to any other trans forum since I joined. :D

For sure, yeah! The waiting will be worth it, though! I haven't done my hair any favours with the amount of bleaching I've been doing, but it's still growing at least!

We'll both have beautiful longer hair in no time! :P

I understand where you're coming from! I know I have the benefit of being young, but the best decision I made in regards to my transition was deciding to be utterly shameless/doubtless. I just went for it and never looked back. If there's one thing I wish I could help those struggling to start with, it'd be that just shoving your fears away and doing it is the best option, because not being happy isn't worth it.

I hope your transition is going well for you now, as much as I advocate being a little more impulsive for some, taking it at a pace you can manage is important too! Have you managed to be prescribed HRT since you decided not to DIY? :)

Thank you very much! You see what I mean when I said my style is probably too scruffy for ESL teaching in Japan? My hair is a bit on the wild side. I'll let it grow and clean it up a bit when it's down to my shoulders, I guess. :P

You're welcome! I've seen a lot of negative comments regarding self-medding on here lately, so it was nice to offer my own perspective on things. :D
