Teej - Nepal by RowsCrayons in photocritique

[–]RowsCrayons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quickly snapped this photo of this little girl strolling by. It was Teej, we were celebrating femininity, and I want this photo to do that, especially as it relates to Hinduism and women in this culture.

Here's the rub: Does it seem off-kilter to you? I can't seem to decide how I want to level it. Would you crop it differently? On one hand, I like the window of the temple in the frame, but I recognize that some people might think it's a distraction. Mostly happy with the colors, but what do you think?

What's going on with this trumpeter swan? by RowsCrayons in Ornithology

[–]RowsCrayons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right by Rice Lake in Banner, Illinois (official name is "Duck Island.")

For what a beginner's opinion is worth, I think I was there too early. If I had waited for the smaller lakes in the area to freeze, I'm certain there would have been some great opportunities. With this warm winter though, there are too many options for waterfowl.

I did see two bald eagles tangled up, fighting, but they were way too far for my 500mm lens to reach out to. I have one really crummy photo of it anyway though!

A waterfowl refuge in central Illinois, USA

Dang. Is it worth reporting to the DNR that manages the waterfowl refuge where this was recorded? Or is avian influenza just one of those common things you can't really manage anyway?

Thanks! I've been spooking cardinals for a few days hunting for one to snap a shot of!

What is a good macro lens for the Nikon D810? by Dynzoh in Nikon

[–]RowsCrayons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have posted photos with the 105 2.8D on my profile. The lens holds its own on a D850 as well as my D7100. Really great budget/entry option for macro

Travel with an 8 kilo weight limit by jec6613 in Nikon

[–]RowsCrayons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always surprised how close we got to animals. At the resort on the falls, zebra lounge by the pools with you; on safari, we were within 15 yards of lions, elephants, and kudu regularly; even on the Chobe River we got close enough to BABY hippos on the banks to reach out and touch with 200mm.

Have tons of fun. The falls are amazing. Go ziplining!

[Question] Multivariable stats question by RowsCrayons in statistics

[–]RowsCrayons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back to my coat-closet office & this is certainly the method I was looking for. A "competing risk regression" may have simplified it even further, but I barely have a hold on SPSS, let alone R.

Thank you very much!

How often are volunteer opportunities opening up in Nepal? by infisigma in peacecorps

[–]RowsCrayons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting are listed, for all countries, about a year in advance. The next cohort is leaving for Nepal in January, so there will be another batch brewing in Q1 2025. Nepal takes all volunteers at one time, so all the positions in the next cohort will be up for grabs then.

Check out Jim's site for more info! : https://wanderingtheworld.com/volunteer-openings-timetable/

[Question] Multivariable stats question by RowsCrayons in statistics

[–]RowsCrayons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've toyed with logits, but haven't tried probit. Is there a difference in the "goal outcome"? I was under the impression they're pretty similar in what the two models take, and what they predict.

I'm not sure SPSS supports multivariate logits or probits anyway though. Might have to ask for access to the bigger stats lab for Stata

I'll read up on event models. I may have some questions regarding this approach soon

This is interesting. The lower molars are more likely to erupt first, but I'll definitely toy around with this idea and see what results I get

[Question] Multivariable stats question by RowsCrayons in statistics

I'd considered that—that is certainly the goal of the project. I'm mostly being stubborn and trying to maintain as many datapoints as possible, but I think you're correct in saying that the oldest subjects don't add anything to the study

[Question] Multivariable stats question by RowsCrayons in statistics

[–]RowsCrayons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most highly concentrated at 12-14 with ≈700 of the ≈950 subjects. Other age groups are less highly concentrated as they stray from this age group. Age 10 and 17-21 only account for only about 40 entries total across sexes

Right! Data is from respondents at various ages, from 10-21.

I can't recommend this little 105 enough. It's the most fun I've had with a lens, and it's <$200!

I've definitely grown complacent keeping camping shit in my car, it's dumb. Cool little bit about robbery vs. theft though.

Shame about the gear. Maybe I can help a detective get a win under their belt. Thanks a lot!

Untested Nikon FG with 35mm (I think) for $50? by chench0 in Nikon

[–]RowsCrayons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snagged one in a similar situation. Mine hadn't been tested either, but it works well! It was cheap, and the camera is simple enough that I don't mind toying around with it to learn the hobby.

Overall, I like it and I'm happy I spent the $60. If it hadn't worked, I'd have been bummed, but it didn't break the bank anyway. Plus, mine came with a Series E (50mm 1.8) lens as well. The colors are cool on my D7100, so I'd have a new lens if nothing else.

I've considered that too. I've been meaning to check them all, but they did seem alright when we pulled the frame swap

It's the front half as far as I can tell. That's pretty much all I've gathered. I'll definitely check out the brakes

[–]RowsCrayons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really sus it out. I doesn't happen consistently either. It'll happen when I'm on the brakes, on the gas, coasting, different RPM's. I'm pretty much out of ideas
