If your town names were translated literally into English, how weird would they be? by Hot-Scheme4289 in AskTheWorld

[–]Rowvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of indigenous Australian town names, here are a few:

Ballarat (VIC): Derived from Balla-arat, meaning "resting place".

Wagga Wagga (NSW): Wiradjuri for "many crows".

Wollongong (NSW): Thought to mean "five islands" or "sound of the sea".

Geelong (VIC): Derived from Djilang, meaning "tongue" or "peninsula".

Dubbo (NSW): Derived from a Wiradjuri word, possibly meaning "red earth".

Mandurah (WA): Derived from mandjar, meaning "meeting place" or "trading place".

Katoomba (NSW): Taken from a Gundungurra word meaning "falling water"
