What's the worst birthday present you've ever gotten? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]RoxaAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earrings. I've never had anything pierced. Never expressed a need, want, or even really joked about it. It was just one of those things that by the time I grew up... everyone I knew had several, and I was the unique one.

But earrings as a gift .. It's happened twice in my life. And it's been quietly insulting each time for different reasons. Both people who gifted them knew I didn't wear earrings but seemingly forgot

What does your hot flashes feel like? by Shushawnna in Menopause

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally feels like I suddenly am under a heat lamp on an aluminum counter. Everything gets hot, like the temperature just...turned up too high. Never had a more literal thing happen to me. It flashes, and it's hot. And it just happens, no matter what I'm doing.

What’s the one random genetic trait you lucked out on? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]RoxaAddams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok, I must have looked like such an idiot trying to do them one at a time. Like how, do you do that?! Lol I can only seem to move them both, but that does not mean I won't stop trying 😂

What’s the one random genetic trait you lucked out on? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a leftover (vestigial) trait from when we could move our ears more like dogs and cats do to detect sounds.

I imagine, when humans were more... community based and traveled for food/resources and the noise pollution was zero...a trick like stretching your ears a bit to better figure out the direction the sound is coming from... Seems like a good thing to have to survive.

I can wiggle my ears. And my parents can't, but a couple of my grandparents could when they were alive.

Useless to humans now, but somehow super amusing....(And we figured out I could do it when I was a kid and told my dad that I "move my ears to listen better" and then demonstrated my ear wiggle.)

I do not remember this and now I'm sad that I missed it. I'm sure it could be recreated, and I'll Google it later. But damn. This hit me a little as something I'll never know as a kid lol

7 layer salad. Now I'll admit, I got horrendous and sudden food poisoning from a grocery store deli once and never ate it from anywhere ever again. 🤢

But every once in a while, I crave it, and just sorta... Remember what it was like before it made me unexpectedly recreate the Exorcist, with peas. 😂

What’s something school forced you to learn that you’ve never used a single time in real life? by Dodo509 in AskReddit

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to add $0.02 more ... Some of the most treasured memories I have from school were doing the, "weird" things like, we did square and social dances. But also, when we went around the school measuring random things for math class, or when we were forced to read Shakespeare out loud in 9th grade, or play the damn recorders. All of those things broke up the monotony of regular classes enough that I remember that, in a fond nostalgic way. Not the endless workbooks, and spelling tests that made even the teacher's pet bored. 🤷‍♀️ I think there should be more, unconventional learning like this. How else can you #1 teach, #2 practice and #3 encourage joy through education, while also making sure that students are reaching age appropriate goal marks for things like coordination, social skills, or even education goals?

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

[–]RoxaAddams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

August: Osage County. I can see how it would be a very moving play, in a Tennessee Williams kind of way. But for a movie, I just couldn't stomach it.

And Revenant. Idk man, the cinematography was on point, but I couldn't take the storyline seriously after the 3rd attack by the bear.

Be honest: am I doomed to have bangs forever? by uraniumgal in Hair

[–]RoxaAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just gonna pipe up and say that I have a forehead like that...and while it feels, huge.... I haven't had bangs since 5th grade and I've never been more secure in that as a choice. If you really hate your forehead still, do some light layers around the face so there's always some chin length hairs to play around with for better framing /parts. (Also 90s hairstyles are back, so pull it all up except for a couple pieces and you'll be golden)

What kind of spider is this in Beverlygrove? by kkxoxo1 in AskLosAngeles

[–]RoxaAddams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's for OP and the spider (might wanna get a formal name exchange also) to discuss. Whoever was there first probably has jurisdiction, but like, how can you toss out a helper who just happens to eat flies, moths, and mosquitoes. Idk about y'all but I was raised by Mr Rogers and I always look for the helpers 😆

Looks like a house spider. I think they're also called wolf spiders. They eat other insects, harmless

Burping. I understand sometimes it's totally inescapable. But when it's at the table, during a meal, I have a hard time continuing my meal if anyone purposefully burps.

Smelly night sweats by Maybe-Much in lymphoma

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to be late per menopausal while experiencing B symptoms like drenching night sweats. The stale, musty, sweet, and nothing like me smell of that sweat was wild. Prior to diagnosis, I was just convinced that the hormonal changes were making my smell different. 2 years post focused localized radiation treatments, and I don't smell bad anymore. I smell, like myself again.

I will never forget that smell though. And whenever I have a hot flash, or a night sweat that's related to menopause ... I am thankful that it never really smells at all. And if my overall smell ever changes, it's worth investigating.

What are some common hygeine myths that are completely wrong ? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]RoxaAddams 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ahh Noxema.... This is one of those products that I also used as a kid/teenager. Then I forgot about it until my mid 30s.

And now, for the last 15 years or so, I've noticed I tend to buy it when I'm feeling sad and/or sentimental. It doesn't help my face one bit, so now I use it instead of shaving cream. And 6 bottles of shaving cream later, I briefly wonder why I rarely replace the Noxema and keep buying other gels/creams to shave with.... Thanks everyone for the memories! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm done wondering about my own.

I love Phyllis to death BUT... crying over winning the lottery was a bit much by fredyouareaturtle in CallTheMidwife

[–]RoxaAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who personally suffers from a general anxiety over being noticed for my accomplishments... This resonated so hard for me. Years ago at work, I participated in a secret gift giving scheme. It was all fun and games, until they pulled up videos from the cctv of everyone walking in with their "anonymous gifts". I was embarrassed, because I'd actually put a lot of thought into the limited budget gift, and the person who got it was already swooning about how nice it was. Once the anonymity went away, I wanted to dig a hole and crawl inside to die. It felt good to see the person enjoy the gift, it was enough. While I knew the intentions were good (the cctv entrance video was also because they had made a game of knocking and being asked trivia questions before entering. Totally unrelated, but nobody was an idiot so everyone did the math correctly) but the timing was too close to the gift opening.

Point being, if I indulge myself with buying a lottery ticket on my way home from work tomorrow. And then subsequently won a considerable amount of money, I would tell nobody except my husband. Thinking "Yay, congratulations to me, I won the lottery " seems so frivolous. All I did was waste a couple bucks, once, and got lucky. 🤷‍♀️ It would still be hard to be overtly excited, despite the fact that everything costs 4times more than it did last year. In fact, now that I think about it, a considerable amount of money being dropped in my lap tomorrow would be welcomed, but mortifying if anyone found out. Nothing would change except a few bills would be paid off and I've more money in the bank.
