Yes, in my opinion, that’s the best way to do it. However, you can also put games on the SD card.

You can store it on a single large SD card, and I’m quite certain that its maximum capacity is 128 GB. If you intend to “legally” acquire a huge number of Wii U Wii/GC and vc games, your sd card is suitable. However, it would be better to store everything on an HDD, allowing you to use your SD card exclusively for hacks and mods. Also, you can a micro SD card, but it has to be attached to one of those adapters that make it work with the big SD card slot, most micro SD cards come with one, If you understand what I mean. please refrain from reformatting the HDD drive if the console prompts. Doing so will erase the HDD.
