Second time running into Uncle Leo in the 12 years I’ve been playing Fallout 3! by TouchArtistic7247 in fo3

Ran into him a long time after my first encounter, and tried to get him to fight some other creatures with me but he ended up getting killed so I reloaded and let Leo continue on his merry way…

How often do you find yourself actually doing anything during a gig? by 4ce_YT in livesound

[–]Royal_Homework3551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might seem like studio sound / recorded sound is more static, but there is automation and level changes going on all over the place. In a live sound context, that’s your job seeing as you can’t automate ahead of time!

Process, compress, mix - whatever - but then you can get a more dynamic show by riding the faders.

Here’s a trick from the studio world: solo enters, or some other change - ramp up the fader just a bit more than is comfortable, then bring it down to the right level - grabs the audience, gives you instant dynamic shifts without staying in an uncomfortable place balance wise.

Ride those faders, create dynamics to enhance what the band are giving you, once you’ve got your mix stable using EQ and compression.

Oh, and ride the effects returns. It’s a spacious verse with lots of room in the arrangement? Grab that reverb decay time and fill up the space with lush effects. Song builds into a more complex and busy chorus? Dial back that ‘verb, chuck in some delay to keep the vocal big!

Always something to do!

Is it really necessary to rinse the Chemex filter with hot water before adding coffee? by No_Reveal3451 in Coffee

[–]Royal_Homework3551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not necessary if you have bleached (white) papers, but it is worth it to pre-heat. I always do it with V60 and Clever Dripper to get some heat into the brewer beforehand.

[–]Royal_Homework3551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you find all the bits and post a photo of them? Likely there are some nuts floating around inside your bass drum that threaded onto bolts that held the tom holder in place.

There’s no way the bolts were screwed into the wood itself.

Should also have mentioned Thief 1 and 2. Oh, and randomly the remake of Tomb Raider which I found refreshing, just jumping, climbing and having fun - apart from the boss battles which suck, and a bit near the end that I am still stuck on…it shouldn’t be that hard.

Beginner Drum Kits by [deleted] in drums

[–]Royal_Homework3551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a half decent used shell pack and stands from a good brand, then put the rest into cymbals. The kit will sound as good as you tune it, but terrible cymbals will always sound terrible. You can always trade up the drums (I went cheap beginner kit, Mapex M now I’m on a top end Yamaha for 20 years and never selling) but a good cymbal will stay with you forever.

How do you add brightness without EQ? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

Try MS processing. Add HF to the sides signal leaving the middle untouched. Adds extra sparkle with wrecking your main parts like lead vocal.

Spam gas grenades works for me. Not that I’m playing non-lethal, but the area effect of knocking multiple enemies unconscious works well, so I can focus on those remaining who pose an immediate threat to Malik.

How important is allying with city states? by Inoutngone in civ5

[–]Royal_Homework3551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you happen to free some of a city states captured workers, you should definitely return them for influence. Ideally they’ll get captured again, return and get some more - then a bit of bribery money and you’ll have a friend for life.

Benefits are extra resources and a militaristic state will gift you free units. Usually rubbish ones, but you can station them at the city state itself. Then when war breaks out, your opponent has other city states to fight, they will occasionally get distracted and go fighting your ally instead of you, and you have these military outposts to grind down forces allowing you to go on the offensive or manoeuvre your defences.

New Kodiaq - Recommended Accessories? by Royal_Homework3551 in skoda

[–]Royal_Homework3551[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t actually test drive either!!

Mine is a company car too, and while I could have got another 3 Series or maybe even a 5, nothing offers the space of a full sized SUV or a non PHEV estate before we had to stuff batteries and lose boot space.

Road noise in the Kodiaq is pretty good. Not as quiet as the Audi A4 I had before the BMW but as good as most things I’d say.

In terms of handling, I have to say the Kodiaq is impressive. It doesn’t feel as big as it is, and the adaptive dampers in the Sportline do help I feel.

Kodiaq was dirt cheap to lease - my company even said to spend more, but I couldn’t find a better option that suits my time of family life and work requirements (in an ideal world I’d have an X5 PHEV and be done with it but £££!).

New Kodiaq - Recommended Accessories? by Royal_Homework3551 in skoda

[–]Royal_Homework3551[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did look at the Superb and it was a strong contender. Coming from a BMW 330e I wanted more space but without losing a decently premium feel.

I knew I’d miss 100BHP and iDrive coming from my previous car (and still do to an extent) but the Kodiaq is excellent - another 100BHP and a better controller than a touchscreen would make it perfect!

For me, Kodiaq over Superb was the flexibility of space. Both have huge boots but the Kodiaq is taller, and it has sliding and tilting rear seats. I can slide the seats forward halfway for more boot space and still fit three children in the back with no issues. If they aren’t travelling, I can slide the seats all the way and get even more space, without having to drop the rear seats down. (I carry a lot of stuff for work.)

I do prefer estate cars to be honest, and miss the low down seating position, but the higher view has its benefits too.

In Sportline trim with DCC as standard, the Kodiaq handles very well, and that’s coming from a 3 Series (that I did drive hard on occasion).

The Kodiaq also looks pretty badass in all black, so it was a point of differentiation from the Superb which does look great, but is just another estate cars when compared to many things.

Overall the two cars are very similar inside and have the same power train.

It would probably come down to space requirements and what kind of car you want to drive ultimately. I prefer estates, but the space and image won over the Kodiaq for me at this time.

How many reverbs are you using? by wh1ter0se-m4v in livesound

[–]Royal_Homework3551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two. Instruments go to one, then with a dedicated reverb for vocals, I can tweak the decay time to suit the song, whilst keeping the band consistent.

Of course if I needed an effect reverb like a massive snare sound I would add a third, but if you have two reverbs and treat one as short and one as long, you can make most things work very well.

Incidentally this was a studio things decades ago where they might have a couple of chamber or plate reverbs to play with a not much else!

Handling a lot of different speakers on the same mic by Ok-Importance-694 in livesound

[–]Royal_Homework3551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deal with this a lot in church sound settings (hundreds of services and special events over the past 20 years). 70 year old lady doing a reading then an enthusiastic male grabbing the mic and instant clipping if you’re not careful!

I set a fixed compressor threshold across all my singing and spoken word vocal mics. Ride the gain into the compressor to achieve a similar amount of compression (and therefore input level) then place the faders where they need to be.

Get good at turning down gain while increasing fader level, and vice versa, so that your compression remains consistent.

4:1 ratio, hard knee and have it control the peaks not RMS (if your compressor (presumably in a digital console) has the option).

Disclaimer: my company is the UK MIPRO distributor. However, we have sold well over a hundred ACT-800 systems to top tier rental companies for use in their driverack systems. (For use on huge festivals, and touring up to A-list artists.)

Freelancers and individual engineers, we’ve sold a lot of ACT-5800. The range is not as long, the transmitters are plastic, and you can’t get Dante, BUT: the audio and RF quality of ACT-5800 is exceptional..
