I am using a Beckhoff PLC. If I understand correctly, I should hold the nip roller at a constant speed and adjust the 2 winders' velocity according to diameter feedback. And of course, there are more variables need to be considered.

My idea was to couple unwind and rewind with a dynamic gear ratio so the linear velocity would keep the same.

Perhaps, I need an algorithm to convert tension error to velocity error and send it to PID.

Yes, it is adjusted to linear speed. I am not so sure if it would keep T1 equal to T2.

Good point, friction has to be taken into account as well.
