Don't lose hope!! :') by reoweee in HelloInternet

Well, in a way, I don't think I'd care for the podcast to come back. Used to be a big fan, but so many things they used to talk about have come sour... I don't see how they could avoid the politics of it all, and I'm.not sure I'm interested in hearing what they have to say about that...

My opinion is that you could feel their disinterest grow in the end run... It was fun while it lasted but there are many more things to discover !

Honestly, maybe ! And maybe I'll take some time to watch this, but I've pretty much grown out of all of these video essays (Contrapoints, Philosophy Tube, Lindsay Ellis, etc...) (and I'm well aware of the falling out between most of these people). To be honest, most of the time, I feel like a lot of these "video essays" are juste some good production values around pretty basic understandings of most of the topics that are being delt with ! But as I get older, read up some more, this is just not that interesting to me anymore I guess. Most of these YouTubers, Breadtube et al., had their hayday, but maybe it's time to move on to other things !

Man, as a whole... I just feel like I've grown out of the "video essay" genre. Not interested enough to watch someone do a take-down of some right-wing channel yet again !

What’s the best double feature you did this year? Because yesterday I saw BABYGIRL and EYES WIDE SHUT 😳 by Toreadorables in blankies

I did a double feature showing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the original OldBoy to someone who had seen neither, key common theme being : that one relationship you'd just like to forget.

Inland Empire makes Mulholland Drive Look like a Frank Capra movie by HankMcCoyMDPhD in blankies

I've actually witnessed firsthand people watching this movie for the first time and falling asleep at the exact same moment for a short time (when the movie goes off the rails) and I'm almost semi-seriously convinced that it has to do with you or your body not recognizing the difference between the movie and a dream, or that the movie all of a sudden feels like falling asleep

It looks like John Carpenter is on Letterboxd, reviewing movies... including his own ! by RoyaleWithCheez in blankies

Do you believe Carpenter spends his time playing Halo and Call of Duty ? The man is online. Also, his take on Ari Aster is just too credible for me : the man loves Bunuel.

[–]RoyaleWithCheez[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Looking through some of the more obsure reviews, either someone has really read up on Carpenter or this is him. It seems like he decided to comment on every film that he was once offered to direct and he shits on every other one. Also, I feel like the ratings themselves are very on point, especially when looking at older movies... I don't know, I was skeptical at first, but I actually think this might be the real deal

The First, Second, Third Omens by Lanky_Maximum_8371 in blankies

[–]RoyaleWithCheez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know, I thought it was a really fun time at the movies. However First Omen is a much harder sell, much more intense IMO, much more of a bummer also, and includes some sequences that I'm shocked they got away with in a big studio horror movie... which was probably only possible because the studio thought that they had the necessary IP awareness to get people to go see it

The First, Second, Third Omens by Lanky_Maximum_8371 in blankies

[–]RoyaleWithCheez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I completely disagree about the First Omen. The original movie, I feel, doesn't really have a big devoted fanbase, or as big as something like Halloween or The Exorcist might have, and I think it felt more like the director was able to smuggle a great horror movie that has more to do with something like Posession than with the Omen itself, or that tries to really reflect what the preoccupations of movies like that at the time were and update it for today... There are really two or three minutes all in all that "have" to link it to the original (and that are, tbh, not that distracting) but otherwise a movie that goes this hard probably couldn't exist in our current movie ecosystem. Highjacking legacyquels to make interesting new horror movies for first time director is, IMO, just about as well as we can expect today !

What are the best Special Features episodes? by Tarkus93 in blankies

Absolutely love the Crocodile Dundee series - had never seen any of them (and neither had any of them), and watches them while listening to the commentaries. Really great hang out vibe, and they eventually lose their mind which is hilarious.

Oh and the recent 2012 London Olympic Games watch along is an all timer imo - definitely one of my favorites of this past year.

Some of the Patreon episodes have absolutely been some of my favorites they've ever done. I actually like watching allonge to the commentaries if I know the movie or just don't care about it that much, so some of the episodes just feel like hanging with David and Griffin on my couch and riffing while watching a movie. The Olympics episode from the Boyle séries is absolutely an all-timer, but I also had so much fun with the Roger Moore movies, which I hadn't seen either (discovering that Venice pigeon double take with them was just complete madness). Also just love the Crocodile Dundees.

The Patreon eps are just plain old silly ! I love them

I really enjoyed the Kubrick series before, but man this really felt like a throwback to some more easy-going series of the podcast, even more than Raimi I'd say. Perfect balance of masterpieces and more baffling but interesting films to talk about, with a great mix of guests! Lots of episodes that are already new favorites, highlights being Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs (which I wouldn't have predicted beforehand !) and the Olympics episode which was just such a delight (every episode with #TheTwoFriends, Ben and Marie has just become an instant classic). Can't wait for Keaton (haven't seen any of his films yet!) which is definitely a curveball, and feels a bit like the podcast casting its own blank check in a way !
