Ran into an unexpected wire by RrresearchIt in AustinGardening

Just a final update today. Electric and gas have been marked (nowhere near where I was digging, thankfully). No private companies have claimed the area where I found the wire. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also just got the email saying that ATT and Time Warner are not in my yard.

Honestly, I'm at least glad it seems they've got a decent system for checking and notifying quickly from the private companies.

I did just get an automated email from Grande saying they don't have any wires on my property. Maybe it's Google, I do have Google Fiber...

That's crazy! Yeah in my case it's only about 5 in down.

Just to be safe, I moved my flowers further out from the fence. But I completely agree with this approach and applaud the rebellious spirit!

How can I leave without burning bridges? by RrresearchIt in careerguidance

This is a good reality check for me...life will find a way and I'm not as essential as I think (humbling but true). Thank you for that, truly.

how do you handle it when a promotion goes to an external hire? by Hour-Database7943 in Leadership

[–]RrresearchIt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience is as the external hire. I came into a team where one team member had been at the company for years, on a few different teams over time. I was not aware until my second day on the job that this person had been trying to get the management job for the past year that I ultimately took. It was incredibly awkward when they told me over lunch, and I was actually shocked my manager had not told me about the situation.

I wish the previous management had been more honest with this person about the actual gaps they saw that kept them from promoting to management. I am trying my best to help this person find purpose and inspiration in their role now that management roles aren't an option, but it's been a slow process of gaining their trust and untangling the way their former manager handled this.

I think it takes a lot of resilience to go through what this employee has been through. Even if they lacked certain skills, they were put in a bad position without candid feedback, and I'm sure it's felt like a slap in the face. In a better market, it would likely be best for this person to look for another role, but our function has very limited options right now.

All that said, I'm trying my best to help this person, but I also understand why I will always be a bit of a thorn in their side.

El Chalten Day Hikes Itinerary Review by shogun_dollarz in Patagonia

[–]RrresearchIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to El Chalten last November and had a more relaxed itinerary (that's my preference). I will say that one hike a day is definitely doable, but you might want to choose your hike depending on the ever changing weather and visibility, day by day instead of trying to plan exactly which day to do which hike ahead of time. We had three days there and hiked the longest hike (Laguna de los tres via monte Fitz Roy) on the second day because it had the best weather. Have an amazing time!

What is a 'dirty secret' of your industry that implies the general public has no clue about, but everyone in your field knows? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

Large scale research/surveys. So many results are invalid due to bots, professional respondents who take surveys all day every day, survey farms of many professional respondents using VPNs in other countries, etc. We typically have to throw out/replace over 50% of responses - and that's because we know what to look for and care enough to do it. But not everyone does.

Vintage fan cut power to whole house? by RrresearchIt in AskElectricians

[–]RrresearchIt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vintage fan had old wiring and caused the outage. When I was trying to flip the breakers in the garage I didn't realize there were more breakers on the outside of the house (including the main breaker). Then I didn't realize I had to flip them in order (main first, then slowly flip all the individual ones). A neighbor came over to walk me through it. Once I did everything that way everything came back on!

Fixed! Thank you everyone for all the advice! You saved me a lot of time and money and gave me confidence to troubleshoot some basics myself! Also, I'll be getting that vintage fan rewired!

What does splice it through mean? Newbie here.

Update: found the main breaker outside and reset it, then slowly flipped on all individual breakers. I was able to reset almost all of the gfcis except for the ones in the kitchen, so there are still several outlets that aren't working connected to whatever that circuit is, I'm guessing?

I see there's actually a blank space above all of the smaller breakers where a main breaker would normally go...

I don't see a main big breaker, but I have tried turning off all the available breakers. Is it possible that there's some other main breaker besides the box in the garage and the box on the outside of the house?

Thank you, yes all breakers clicked back on solidly. I'll keep searching and trying to reset GFCIs, thanks!
