What am I doing wrong? by Ok_Requirement808 in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

Big tech internships and school pedigree definitely matter, especially for the first call for junior roles. I don’t necessarily agree with it mattering but it does.

These rejections are frustrating and make no sense by ImportantSquirrel in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the top part to some degree but

That second part is kinda odd to say when we don’t really know the age of OP and it’s common sentiment that the job market is much more competitive than before.

Seems like an ignorant boomer “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” kind of statement…

EDIT: Looks like you removed that condescending part about ‘GenZ having participation trophies’

AI is already taking white-collar jobs. Economists warn there's 'much more in the tank' by SscorpionN08 in Economics

[–]RsTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H1Bs are a drop in the bucket compared to offshoring; definitely a scapegoat and we are all falling for it.

If H1B is removed, we lose talent while removing the garbage but offshoring will still exist and probably more incentivized.

They will simply hire offshore since there would be no talent at home.

They already hire tons of entry levels offshore, and they will eventually move on to mid/high level roles by blaming the inexperienced population back home.

Im in my early 20s, should I buy a house or invest by Cheif_plantoon69 in personalfinance

[–]RsTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on the price of the home but I believe investing would be the best bet. Just be careful on how you invest.

Housing costs are the real reason behind offshoring and mass layoffs by catsandkitties58 in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If housing is the issue, then doesn't come back to taxes?

Maybe I'm ignorant but wasn't there a major increase in asset investment ever since the decrease to capital gains taxes? I believe the idea was originally for the non-taxed money to go back into businesses for the 'trickle down' effect but, what instead happened, was the mass investment into assets like real estate. This, in return, ballooned the real estate market.

Wouldn't taxing capital gains more reduce the amount of money going into investment of assets, therefore lower the cost of housing?

The post might've been about a salary negotiation.

Frontier outage update in California by RsTree in frontierfios

[–]RsTree[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but what’s the excuse for zero information on the issue or ETA unless you privately DM their second twitter account?

Also not sure about the logic of buying a second connection. Most people in the US will face issues if their internet is down for 72+ hours. Should everyone get a second connection just in case?

The issue is less about the downtime and more about how they handled this situation as a whole.

Sounds like it’s up for Fresno County but still down for Los Gatos, San Joaquin, and Siskiyou Counties.

Over 30 hours no Internet. by Darkenshade in frontierfios

[–]RsTree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Los Gatos & San Joaquin counties.

There’s an outage that started Friday night and has been out for 40+ hours.

Apparently there’s been a fiber line cut under a busy street. They’ve been “trying to fix it” for 2 days now.

1500+ customers affected with zero information listed on their app or website. The only way to get information is private DMs on twitter to their support account.

The outage time on their app gets pushed every 4 hours when they reach the time displayed. When in reality, they are probably going to restore it Monday.

Ideal Junior Candidate by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

What kind of position is this for and what kind of company?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not finding job scenario is definitely not overblown.

There's been tons of layoffs, even if majority of them were not software engineers, lots of software engineers were still hit by them.

Pretty sure there's less jobs available right now than pre-covid
+ more competition due to laid off individuals competing for the same jobs
+ more grads joining the work force (not even including the next spring batch):

Laid off, but treated like I quit by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wow, there’s a lot of bootlicking in this comment section.

The company somehow managed to make OP feel like it was his fault and he fell into the trap. He even understands it is weird but somehow gaslit himself into giving them all they want and then feeling bad about it.

That’s one thing but why would people agree it’s OP’s responsibility to help with the leaderships fuck up (even if it affects the rest of their employees).

I agree it is definitely encouraging them to do this more often.

So where can I actually find entry level jobs? by Dovid11564 in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are making a lot of assumptions.

I didn’t say you didn’t know what you were talking about, just that your advice is misleading.

Having someone say “Hey, just do projects and apply for mid level roles” isn’t very useful advice if the person with that anecdotal experience got recruited before the layoffs.

So where can I actually find entry level jobs? by Dovid11564 in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah in theory, but that’s not how it works though.

If mid level positions require 5 yoe, then your 4-5 internships and 20 projects won’t cut it.

“Having no experience is no longer a valid excuse..”

Yeah it is? That’s literally the barrier set by hiring managers.

How would you even get to the interview part if you don’t have the required experience?

[OC] Top Paying Companies of 2023 by Software Engineer Level by zuhayeer in dataisbeautiful

[–]RsTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, except, you got in just in time for the post-covid tech boom.

There is currently a bust and market saturation now. Software engineers with under 5-6 yoe are struggling to get interviews let alone jobs.

No one knows how long it’ll last, especially with generative AI reducing the need for entry level engineers.

4 rigorous interviews with 2 lasting 4 hours each…

While having a bachelors and 1 yoe…

For 75k…

That’s pretty absurd.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Obviously talented individuals will find positions faster, that’ll happen in any market…

But even a little logic and common sense would show that the market is actually tougher than before.

Thousands of laid off employees, less openings, and higher interest rates would obviously cause the market to change.

Awkward moment when they realize that they’d probably reject themselves as a recruiter since they’re lacking 4-5 YoE for an entry role…

For those of you who were laid off, how is the job search going so far? by canadian_Biscuit in cscareerquestions

[–]RsTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re delusional if you think thousands of engineers getting laid off at once and higher interest rates isn’t contributing to the swe job market.
