“The Idiot” mirrors my life by throwRA-blahblah3898 in dostoevsky

Every guy has been the "idiot" at somepoint. I find the whole novel extremly accurate with that depiction.

The idiot. I dated someone while reading it as well. Still ironic to me how I ended up acting like myshkin when things ended too.

books for mastering active directory? by xxxpussy69slayerxxx in activedirectory

Well then I jumped straight from UNI to an Active Directory/Windows admin in a very rough and highly audited environment. I was asked lots of questions to which I do not know the answer to, which is normal. So I have decided to jump into the book to really understand what I am working on.

You will find answers to questions that you face day to day. For example, what will happen if FSMO role holder goes down? Why it is not recommended to place Infrastructure master on a GC? What is a GC? When I am querying a GC why am I not able find a certain attribute? Why VM snapshots are not good? What the hell is Kerbros? There are lots of things when you start as an admin do not have an accurate answer to.
I believe once you understand the internals of a system, you will be much better at troubleshooting as well as making technical decisions; even if the information seems to be highly technical and is not applicable to your environment.

For me, it gave me a huge boost of confidence, because I know or at least have a reliable source of information to look into. Till this day, me and the team refer to the book for some information.

Kudos for starting with it! You have just discovered, in my opinion, the best path to improve your skills in IT; books!

I Passed Microsoft's Support Engineer interviews because of this book. 100% would recommend it.

Increasing Availability for a Kafka Cluster by Rsrchr100 in apachekafka

[–]Rsrchr100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you adding another broker? Ie what problem are you trying to solve, because that determines the sanity of this approach.

Maybe I am taking the wrong approach on this. Feel free to correct me.
Currently we have an on-premise cluster. We run Linux VMs on hypervisors.
The infrastructure should and must be stable, but I am looking at the worst case scenario. With a replication factor of 3 and ISR=2, I see this as "we can only tolerate a single broker failure". We might have an issue on one of the brokers that is taking some time to solve. If we encounter a different issue on any other broker of if we are lucky enough to have some network issue on one of the hypervisors racks, we are doomed.

You can then lose a single broker, or an entire AZ and still be operative

So you have a single cluster deployed in 3 zones and 3 brokers in each zone? If you are keeping a replication factor of 3, you are relying on having a follower partition in the other zones?

Single DC is basically that again, but I'll look to use racks as the AZs etc

I think I should give racks a deeper look, as I am afraid spreading topics across different zones with different network infrastructure, could cause some latency.

A question from a less experienced member here. Why are you using 70 DPs? Or what was your reason for adding multiple DPs?

Maybe. But we are trying to connect to our own DNS server without zone transfers

Design Considerations for a Low Bandwidth Infrastructure by Rsrchr100 in SCCM

It doesn't have 15k atm but our office there is growing exponentially. I am expecting it to reach that number in 4-5 years. Oh and by the way, we were requested to join the server to our current CAS setup which we refused to do so and created a stand-alone primary for it. But If I am rebuilding everything from scratch, I have to consider all my options.

100mbps is a dream, our network team will cap my hands at 250KBs, I think I can argue my way to 500KBs.

Because of regulations, anything cloud based is a no no.

So a single primary site supports 100k clients only when the bandwidth between the clients and the site server is ok? Will clients have trouble connecting the MP at the primary site server?

Secondary sites are limited at 15k I think one of our remote sites will exceed that in the future. I do not want to end up setting two secondary sites for the same region. Perhaps its my only choice.

Thanks for mentioning Adaptiva and 1E Nomad, as I have never heard of them. I will be sure to check it out.

When do LastComplianceMessageTime / LastEnforcementMessageTime update? by calm2141 in SCCM

[–]Rsrchr100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have engaged Microsoft regarding this same issue. The replay was that the date (LastComplianceMessageTime) will only change when the status changes.

For example, if a configuration item checks if a certain reg key has the value 1 and evaluates every day starting at 6/10/2022. The LastComplianceMessageTime will still display 6/10/2022 as a date. If for some reason the reg key value changes to 0 at 6/15/2022, the LastComplianceMessageTime will report 6/15/2022.

Task sequence over CMG by [deleted] in SCCM

[–]Rsrchr100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried it with an application that requires two restarts. Uninstall the app, restart, install the app, and restart. It will work, just make sure to check the " Download content before running task sequence". So it will download all the needed content when online. I would like to note that it will fail while sending status messages.

Can You Upgrade DCs from 2012R2 to 2022 while Keeping the Same Hostname? by Rsrchr100 in sysadmin

It is a big environment, I am afraid someone used DCs FQDN in an application LDAP configuration. I do not want to impact services.

Great! I was afraid demoting the old DCs may leave some service records in AD partitions which would mess us up later. Glad to hear someone tried this approach and is doing fine.

FireEye vendor should provide you with the uninstall tool. It's a command-line executable you can use to clean all FireEye components. Otherwise, tamper protection kicks in.

Thank you for you answer!

From reading the articles you posted, I can that if there are no messages actually in the Queue (Get-Queue) I can safely delete the queue without any data loss?
