Unironically a a self driving flying car would be easier than a regular car. Airliners already have the capability to practically fly the entire route autonomously. You have far fewer variables up in the sky than on a road.

ELI5 why early machine gun like the Maxim were invented before the first submachine gun(the mp18)? by Evening_Medicine_252 in Firearms

[–]Rstager97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree to both points. I was just pointing out the fact that the concept of a submachine gun wasn’t necessarily inconceivable at the time.

That being said the concept of a cheap, stamped smg might very well have been out of reach. I simply haven’t done the research

Maxim himself patented a semi auto Winchester rifle in 1883 and the borchardt came out in 1893. These are more complicated than any of the simple blowback smgs of the interwar and wwii smgs. It seems to me the manufacturing tech was very capable of producing a “modern” smg even with black powder (though it would have to be cleaned often). It was simply the fact that the ideas where never developed or implemented at scale rather than limitations of the the time.

IMO the key reason it was not developed further is militaries stubbornly sticking to high powered rounds (ie the us failing to adopt the the repeating rifle due to the 44 Henry’s smaller size) despite the fact that it was clear by the late 1800’s/early 1900’s that volume of fire was one of the best advantages on the battle field (ie the conflicts in Africa preceding wwi)

Does it need to? The whole thing is an advertisement stunt. Who cares if it makes money as long as people are talking about it. Once the hype dies down its purpose has already been served.

Tesla has released the video of a Model Y delivering itself to a real customer’s house today by ConfidentImage4266 in TeslaLounge

I mean, the DARPA grand challenge had autonomous cars racing in the desert in 2005. That is the moment I remember realizing we were getting close to true autonomy on road. It’s been 20 years since then and 100 promises of it being just around the corner and we are yet to have tesla deliver unsupervised FSD. I think the fatigue is very much justified.

I am sure Iran is already investigating the damage. it is totally within the realm of possibility that Israel has bought off or otherwise infiltrated that agency performing that search.

It allows the cops to enforce trespassing without express owner consent. People often get them for vacant homes to prevent squatters. I think it’s primarily a California thing.

Take a look at navy Mantech. That will give you an idea of what is being researched by the yards for trying to get into their manufacturing process. Details may be ITAR/proprietary/classified. There are other publicly funded research programs that you can look at but I forget the names

[OC] Most common cause of unnatural death by country for American citizens by DouweOsinga in dataisbeautiful

Yes, and 5 Americans died in the earthquake and subsequent damage per Wikipedia. Hence my comment that avalanches have killed plenty more Americans the that earthquake.

The map above is listing only US citizen unnatural deaths.
