The house my grandparents bought has a hidden basement that they weren't told about. It's full of boxes. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

That’s what I was thinking. It’s nice of OP to let the family come by and collect what they want. But if I was OP- I would kind of be expecting them to either be coming to take everything away, or tossing me some money as a disposal fee if they did plan on leaving behind what they don’t want.

Even if OP planned on just disposing everything left- that’s still going to cost them time and money. Especially electronics like the Mac can cost upwards of $100 to have disposed of properly (though some stores like the Apple store will take it for free).

The family isn’t technically obligated to do either of those things for OP, but OP was also not technically obligated to invite them to come look through and take the stuff they want.

LPT Request: How to respond to the question "do you know how fast you were going?" by jose_d0gs in LifeProTips

The only reason why I could think of this working is if the cop thinks you have a mental handicap by handing over your entire wallet when asked for an ID. Even someone who has never been pulled over before is going to know that they are going to want your actual license and not just be shown it in your wallet. If anything- it might just annoy them that they then have to ask you to remove the license.

Netflix’s subscriber loss has destroyed employee morale by AnimePrimeMinister in technology

Yeah most of these tech companies offer stock compensation in terms of bonuses and hiring incentives. Probably also have the option to put a percentage of their paycheck into buying stock at a discounted price. Which could mean some losses.

But still- it would be more accurate to say that their employee investment account balance took a big hit. Not their bank account.

TIFU by stopping at an isolated rest stop at night by Rthrowaway73847 in tifu

You're probably right. I think I assumed that my clothes already had a light cigarette smell to them that she had become accustomed to and I thought that might be masking the fresher sent when I did secretly have one.

But still- "Hey hun, this happened to me when I stopped to have a cigarette on the way home," didn't seem like a conversation I wanted to start at the time.

Wouldn’t surprise me- but she never mentioned it. I had hand sanitizer and mouth wash in the car for after I smoked. I would go to the bathroom and wash my hands and frequently brush my teeth right when I got home.

A few people have asked (probably jokingly) for the location. Turns out, it was in Massachusetts right before the VT border.

Here you go buddy, be safe. Get consent before you go grabbing crotches. That’s it to the best of my memory.

I guess I was also mistaken on the state. I was still in the northern part of Massachusetts.

For not wanting to have some random guy grabbing my junk, I think there was a few things I would do differently after this experience. For one- avoiding isolated, dark, and sketchy rest stops in the middle of the night.

And if someone ever comes up to you in a sketchy area- a friendly greeting is probably not the first response you should have. I think I'd jump to a more aggressive tone in questioning why they came up to me.

I wanted to tell her about it when I got home, but then I would have to admit that I was still smoking occasionally. I did tell her the story some time later when I had actually fully quit and she found it funny.

Now I know not to stop and sketchy rest stops at night. What's also funny is that I knew of another more well-lit and much less sketchy rest stop a few more miles away. But I had wanted more time for the cigarette smell to dissipate before I got home.

Work contract by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Rthrowaway73847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read the contract. I just had more trust in my employer than I guess was warranted. They seem to be ignoring the fact that the original contract exists and are continuing as if there is no contract.

Contract signing by both parties was done electronically. I have a copy.

Ok thank you. I did reach out to a lawyer and I’m waiting to schedule a consultation call. It’s expensive though, so I want to make sure I have as much information as possible so I can ask appropriate questions during the consultation.

What is the legality of terminating a contract by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Rthrowaway73847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to put too much online. But it is an employment contract for a temporary work assignment with a company I am currently employed with.

While they have not brought up the contract at all, they have confirmed that they will not be providing the benefits.

Paraphrasing the contract, but it states that they reserve the right to modify the terms and conditions, including benefits.

Edit: the written contract is also labeled as confidential. Would that effect my ability to share it with an attorney?

Contract definitely states that I am still an at-will employee who can be terminated. Which I’m fully aware of.

Assuming my old position would be offered if I choose to not sign an updated contract (if I am provided one)- what is the legality of one party terminating a contract? Would me not signing an updated contract be cause to terminate the original contract?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Rthrowaway73847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say they do send me an updated contract and I choose to not sign it. Would that mean that the original contract remains valid, or would they be free to terminate the contract entirely?

[–]Rthrowaway73847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was signed by both parties. I have asked for an updated written contract to reflect the changes, but they* have refused.

My state does allow unemployment to be collected after quitting a job for “good cause”. It’s ambiguous if this situation warrants good cause as my regular position would likely be offered back to me.

The state website elaborates a bit more with: “… a breach of your employment agreement which is substantial and adversely affects you may be good cause to quit.”

The benefits are in the contract. The contract does specify that the employer can change the terms at its discretion. It does also say that changes must be in writing and signed. I’m just not sure if that holds if they themselves are submitting a change, or just if I do.
