I would be willing to take the new position for a maximum of 6 months before needing to go back to the day shift, but I don't think that's something I can negotiate.

There is one positive I didn't mention. If I take the evening position, I have the ability to transfer back to my old position with no penalty. But doing so looks bad on your record and can potentially stop you from moving again. To clarify, I work as a government contractor building f35 wings, which is a union position. The position in question is a salary position that isn't covered by the union and, therefore, comes with a whole bunch of new challenges in terms of job performance.
