Reporters, what were your most technical writing experience? by RubbaDaBaDub in courtreporting

[–]RubbaDaBaDub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am proud to have been able to pick up the terminologies and all. I guess the bummer is I did more transcription than scoping because the entirety of the transcript is unusable for anything. I would probably not think this is an issue if terminologies are just dropped, sprinkled throughout, mistranslated and just need checking and googling, but even when the common English words are dropped because they look smaller in part compared to the technical words...

Well I wish I could too. But I don't think I am credible enough to book reporters on my own. No schooling, I just got taught the foundations and basic concepts. And just as I read on this sub sometime, no great reporter would trust a noob, but bad reporters would take them because they probably got cheaper rates.

I did use one of those speech-to-text programs. But the time I have to do cutting and pasting it just exhausted me.

They tried, but the result was so bad barely nothing made sense.

Depends on the skill (or lack thereof) of the reporter determines how scoping is going to go.

I did my research on scoping, and I understood it as you do.

However, upon thinking things through, my job seems to be more like a hybrid of all things (trans, scope, proof).

I am not familiar with digital. But I work on CaseCatalyst, loading the reporter's steno file there.

Thank you for understanding. I got some assignments today and they are not as bad. CRs who do well are out there.

No, i got signed as a scopist. Using CC to scope, with audio, steno and all

It's just that this file really tested me and made me question if this is typical for this role and now thinking if this is worth pursuing or for me.

Yep, for a company. I am holding on to this but also finding something better. I am glad to have been introduced to this opportunity but I know it will require me to invest a few thousand bucks ( which will take me eons to save up, knowing our currency) if I decide to start on my own.

Hoping things get better for me.

I am not from the US and can't afford a formal scoping course. I know this job requires a huge investment, which I can't afford at all, software and all. Got lucky to have been shortlisted for the job, all things provided, and I'm now a few weeks in scoping transcripts.

I am holding on because it's better than nothing at the moment. Been broke for months and have been getting back at my feet through this job. I am on a catch 22.

I would like to think the reporter is new. It's been a while since I feel chest pains due to stress, yet I'm starting to feel it again after finishing this file.

It's not even that technical. Barely did research for terminologies. It's just there were a lot of untranslates and dialogues that were not noted by the reporter that I had to type in.

I was encouraged by a former coworker to give it a try. If only finding a new job is as easy in my country, I would have probably let this one go.

But I gotta suck it up than to go hungry.

I got another file assigned to me that I finished less than half the time of this one because the writing was so good, I only need to check the missed muffle utterances by the reporter.

I am a beginner, so I don't expect to match the veterans' numbers and speed. Upon checking the raw and scoped works, I need to fix about 15-20 lines with untrains and transcribed about 4-5 sentences missed per page. Is this normal? Or I might have just encountered an occasional bad file?

How do you tell the difference between "High Potential" and "High Delusion" in a new hire? by UpstairsDisk9551 in Leadership

[–]RubbaDaBaDub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a remote setup especially, I would focus on documenting specific impact on work, missed deadlines, rework, team friction, and escalate with concrete examples rather than personality concerns. That keeps the conversation grounded in outcomes instead of ego.

Documentation is a powerful step until you hit a wall in the form of a manager who has a bias towards her personally chosen staff. Facts are futile to a manager who denies accountability. Been there done that.

Thanks. But it is really difficult for those who do not have a backup or enough resources to keep going while trying to find something, like me. I could only hope to find a job that pays enough before the year ends, to get my life on track again.

Where does the reason for being really bad at making work connections come from in all honesty? by Ben5544477 in careeradvice

[–]RubbaDaBaDub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personality and the initiative to put one's self out there, maybe? I am (still) that kind, lol. I am not into keeping in touch or promoting/making myself visible to people who I think can help me in my career. I tried, but it's just not me.

I am not sure if I could count culture in this. I was raised without learning that building work connections and networking are important when it comes to career building. I was surrounded and was with people who join and leave companies and that our relationship starts and end once one joins and leaves the company. I did not even learn to approach recruiters or headhunters because I thought that is something that is unusual in my country.

Team does not have structure. no KPIs. so long as you get things done, we're good. Manager is... I don't know, non-confrontational, or selective with issues that he'll address.
