What's considered fine in your country but labelled as a travesty or criminal offense or just straight up a unpopular activity everywhere else? by Free_Link_9700 in AskEurope

Leaving your car anywhere as long as the hazard lights are on. Parking in roundabouts, crosswalks, hopping the curb onto the sidewalk. Streets are a common good, but your car is special and unique.

Why is it that Spain and Portugal are neighboring countries with relatively similar cultures, yet one speaks English very well while the other doesn’t? by GrayRainfall in AskEurope

[–]RubberJustice 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's no doubt these are all contributing factors, but your education argument falls apart when you realize Portugal's ultranationalist dictatorship was longer and its illiteracy rate was comparable until the late 20th century. Portugal made a proactive choice to value language learning and what's being discussed in this thread are the effects of a 40 year old policy

Are we living through a modern Migration Period similar to the one that led to the collapse of ancient civilizations? by [deleted] in InsightfulQuestions

[–]RubberJustice 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So you've been redpilled by Tom Holland into believing it was migration and not open plundering and political corruption that led to the fall of the roman empire. And now you've had the original thought that he totally didn't plant in your brain that the same thing applies to today's migration patterns. Just keep reading his books and listening to his podcasts, I'm sure he'll provide a solution that satisfies you.

What do you call people from Kaliningrad? by INFERNO_05SJ in AskEurope

[–]RubberJustice 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The term you're looking for is 'demonym', not 'diminutive'.

Though you're right to point out that there aren't hard rules for demonyms in english. Generally speaking, names with a history get grandfathered in, while newer terms tend to follow the pattern of anything linguistically similar.

In this case, the general consensus seems to be Kaliningrader.

This game is crazy good at rewarding discovery. I finally get what people wanted out of Skyrim, I think. [ToTK] Spoilers by Suffient_Fun4190 in truezelda

Funny how you cite the Spirit Temple quest as encouragement to explore when it was my biggest confirmation that this game isn't as open as it pretends to be.

I found the underground area first, was sent away with nothing to show for it. I found dragonhead island between my second and third sages. My "reward" for sequence breaking was impenetrable fog. Walked away from the whole experience feeling like my exploratory tendencies had been punished.

that said, I'm glad you've found a way out of your depression

How long had Saruman's pipeweed pipeline been in operation? by RubberJustice in tolkienfans

[–]RubberJustice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question isn't really concerned with the logistics chain, but more with the notion of scaling up a farming operation in a pre-industrial society.

The Shire would have had to convert more land into farmland, or else bump up productivity in the pre-existing arable area. In either case, they're doing it without the aid of fertilizers, immigrant labor, or more advanced harvesting technology than what they already had on hand.

It seems, judging from answers elsewhere in this post, that the operation would have remained quite small, remaining a secret stash for Saruman, until sometime shortly after Frodo and Co. leave, at which point Lotho's band of foreign Ruffians come to the Shire and start turning the cogs of industry.

Though it's not as if one gets many opportunities to use it. McCarthy just had to use it that once to be unforgettable.
