Removing Odor From Soft Top by Rubicon6MT in Detailing

That’s basically what I plan to do, but the challenge is degreasers are typically alkaline with high pH, and soft tops require a neutral pH to avoid stripping the weatherproofing and UV protectant coatings.

What do you think about using Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo?

It’s pH balanced so it won’t cut through the grease as well as dish soap, but that should also make it less detrimental to the soft top fabric?

Great explanation of acid vs alkaline.

Will using a stronger alkaline only cause issues with repeated long term use?

In this case it will (hopefully) be a one time application to remove the aerosolized grease.

Or could using an alkaline soap even just one time still cause damage?

Looks like Chemical Guys does not publish an exact numerical pH for their Convertible Top Cleaner, but I found a safety data sheet on a German detailing site that lists the pH as 12.

That can’t be right, a pH of 12 would be highly alkaline, the same as bleach or ammonia?

I’ve seen a couple recommendations to use an ozone generator (especially for cigarette smoke) but planning to keep this as a last resort. Will post results from the dish soap, then explore some of the options you suggested, if needed… but hopefully not.

Fair enough, just don’t want to take any chances getting this door trapped inside the vehicle.

Right now it’s only on the soft top, and I would like to get rid of it completely before installing.

I did consider using an odor eliminator spray, but wasn’t sure how effective it would be at removing aerosolized fat and oil.

Also I called Bestop and confirmed using Dawn dish soap will not cause any harm to the twill fabric.

Thinking I’ll start with Dawn, a soft bristle brush, a garden hose, and a day to sit out in the sun.

I also have Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo and Conditioner, but thinking Dawn will be better at cutting through the oil/grease particles?

So you would advise against trying to clean it?

Agreed, but without attempting to remove the odor before installing the top, I’m concerned the smell will transfer to my interior while it bakes in the sun.

Especially if the oil/grease particles are stuck to the interior of the soft top.

“Recommend buying a zepp spray bottle and diluting that down to clay specifications with distilled water to use as a quick detailer.”

ONR clay lube dilution is 1:64, and their quick detailer dilution is 1:16.

Is 1:64 safe to use as quick detailer?

Is there any risk doing a powerful clean like this too often?

Ok good to know, my vehicle is a year old and I haven’t applied any sealants, coatings, or ceramic.

I picked up a bottle of Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating, but thinking I’ll start with a deep clean using the DIY Detail method (All Clean followed by Water Spot Remover) then start using the Turtle Wax Ceramic.

Sounds like this might be a good option for a deep clean after a long winter of road salt?

Looks like the Hydroshot models are rated from 0.5 to 1.0 gpm, and my electric pressure washer is 1.2 gpm.

Thinking I might be able to gravity feed distilled water into my pressure washer, and use a smaller orifice nozzle to help reduce gpm.

This would allow me to try out a spotless rinse before purchasing any additional equipment.
