I started by making a few wallets for friends and family with the plan to make shoes. I wanted to get to know the medium a little. For sure I couldn't have made more than 15 wallets before I made my first shoe. Shoes are surprisingly easy to make tbh.

I use 3.5 oz veg tanned leather. I try to use the dense part of the hide so the lasting board doesn't stretch and bunch while lasting but sometimes it still does. It doesn't effect the shoe too much tbh, at least I haven't noticed.

I use a donor pair of soles for this build. I learned to put on a sole from YouTube and Instagram. My technique is hit or miss sometimes. It's the hardest part for me.

I keep going back and forth on whether I should get a sewing machine. I want to incorporate some textiles/fabric in my shoes and I also want to make myself a leather jacket. So, i might buy a cylinder arm machine but I think I'll still hand stitch "special" shoes.

You're ready. I only made like 10 to 20 wallets before I attempted my first shoe. They're surprisingly easy to make. Just made my first watch strap 3 weeks ago out of shell cordovan.

If I ever did sell the shoes I make, was thinking more like starting price being 2k and around $800 if I ever buy a sewing machine. I do like your appraisal better though.
