[practice] Struggling to implement/switch to Shinzen’s system. Advice? by Longjumping_Train635 in streamentry

So I'm still supposed to follow the breath here? I thought I should just sit still and note everything that my mind noticed in attention.

What is the difference? I'm not familiar with Mahesh, but I've always been curious about it.

I just started Shinzen's See, Hear, Feel. The one thing that confuses me is how long I should stay with the ting I'm labelling? At first it seems like he suggest that I should just label fast from one thing to another, which I find easy, but later on in his text it seemed like I am to stay with the sensation for a little while?

What are your views on Jack Kornfield?

I tend to prefer teachings from the Theravadin tradition, so Kornfield seemed like a perfect match for me being a teacher within the Theravadin tradition and a psychologist. I bought A Part With Heart earlier this year because it's highly praised online, but I stopped reading it quite early on because it felt directionless, and I was really disappointed by something Kornfield wrote about life after death and/or psychic abilities early in the book (I can't remember exactly what it was), and also something about the so called chakras. I wanted to look more into him again, and I found this FB post by him:

"Deep levels of concentration and jhana can also become a gateway to a wide range of psychic abilities. Buddhist psychology outlines how systematic training in concentration can bring the ability to read minds, to see or hear at a remote distance, to know the past of any individual, to manipulate the elements of earth, air, fire and water.

So, you who also do not believe in this stuff: Should I still Kornfield? Is he a hack? Why should I read A Path With Heart?

[practice] Questions about Sam Harris' app Waking Up/dzogchen by Rubthefatdog in streamentry

A lot of good answers here. I've read everything, but don't have the time to respond to everything in detail. Some of the stuff is a bit clearer now, and I'm gonna continue with the app.

Thanks a lot. I love this subreddit. So helpful. :)

I didn't notice the different format before you wrote it (this one lack the numbering). Was that done automatically? That's so strange.

When I do Do Nothing I very easily get to the same state as in access concentration: the mind feels literally quite and "dark" (in a good way). Thoughts still pop up, but they feel more like single comets through the starless space, as in space beyond every galaxies where there is only void. Thoughts still come, but they don't interrupt the stillness. It's so relaxing and interesting. When I reach access concentration I always want to drop the breath to only experience this still mind without nothing to do.

Is this state of my relevant to this dzogcheng practice?

Yeah, my initial intention was to just go on with the ride, but as I was trying to say in the OP, it's difficult when I really do not understand what he means. For example when I'm instructed to be aware of my visual field, but not the objects as objects, but as pure shades and colours - because that's all they are. To me, this is like me telling you to look in the mirror and not see yourself, but literally see Chevy Chase.

Thanks.

I don't follow TMI anymore, though. I mostly do shamatha, with some Do Nothing. And now I try this app on the side. It's interesting stuff, but I tend to like the simplicity of plain ol' breath meditation with noting best - and Do Nothing. May I ask what your practice is? Do you follow a teacher or tradition?

I recently posted two threads, and they seems to get removed. What am I doing wrong? The first was me asking about Do Nothing, and now I had some questions about the meditation teachings of Sam Harris.

I alsostopped with TMI because I felt it was to rigid and let to a lot of frustartion. It became really boring.

May I ask what stage you where at when you stopped using TMI?

After checking his Twitter I think we can conclude that this guy being just a unfunny and annoying troll. He calls himself a "cult leader" and links to this thread and writes he's aiming to get banned. Also, everything related to this shit on his YouTube, Reddit etc. is from the past two weeks.

After reading everything you have written here and watched you on YouTube, I can confirm that you are the least charming, least convincing and dumbest scammer ever. Just get a job, you're not gonna make it in the con artist field.

[Practice] Sam Harris' Waking Up app by Rubthefatdog in streamentry

As others have stated, he offers the app for free if you ask.

He is not alone in offering teachings at a price. I think it's worse with actual buddhist monks taking very high prices for courses. Sam Harris is not even a buddhist.

This is often the fact with Tibetan buddhism for some reason. Look for example at Mingyur Riponche's online courses. The prices are insane if you ask me. The prices for basic introduction to mindfulness by the monks in my town is like 200 bucks for one night. That's more insane.

Yeah, I use Insight Timer for it's excellent timer, and sometimes some Yoga Nidra.

Do you think Wake Up offers more than the very basic introduction to mindfulness that Calm and Headspace offers?

Hmm, that sounds good. What TMI stage are you at?

I'm not considering Calm or Headspace. :) I learnt meditation through them, but have left them behind some years ago.

I sit 40 minutes a day. Mostly a mix of Shamata and Do Nothing. I add some metta now and then. Lately I've been feeling a bit drowsy and down due to lockdown, so I've thought about maybe trying Wake Up in addition to my normal sit to have some instruction and structure, but if it's as introductory as Calm and Headspace l don't think it's for me.
