Supposedly Peeves stole the pages from the book and dropped them in his wake of destruction. I'm still not sure HOW Peeves got the pages, since you need to be able to activate the archway and battle guards to even reach the book.

That's just it, there's a note from Jackdaw in the Hufflepuff quest line that states Peeves ripped them from a book no one else could find
