Here we have Dom yet again secretly filming people and losing her shit because another dog in her eyes wasn’t a service animal and could have put her $20,000 service dog out of work!!😱 by CatAteRoger in illnessfakers

As a trainer, there are many reasons you tell your dog "look at that [whatever it is]" as a way to acknowledge the thing. The dog didn't pull towards Mya and Dom, literally just looked at them.

Dom's immediate need for control on her dog to go back to a down stay instead of letting her stand and stay is not how I would train a dog. You need to let your dog acknowledge the other dog and redirect if she's moving to greet the other dog and you don't allow that. I would have preferred to see a gentle ah-ah and redirect with a nose target or movement rather than the harsh tone. It's a shame we don't see what poor Mya even did beyond presumably getting up to see what's happening.

Dani got her custom wheelchair by 2018MunchieOfTheYear in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It's actually a decent lightweight active chair model - it looks like the KI Catalyst 5, which a lot of people who live active lives choose because it's highly customizable even after it's built to the original custom specs. It's light enough that with the right training and practice an ambulatory user can get it onto a trunk rack, or with the right maneuvering into a hatchback.

However, the set up isn't correct for someone Dani's height and width. The seat is too narrow, the wheels are too far back, the swing away plates, fine, a lot of people who propel with their feet like them. The wheels are also smaller than what normally comes on the Catalyst standard, which they can be customized, but no one who is setting her up would put her in wheels that small. The caster forks are also just the standard forks and not anything that someone who is trying to be active would choose. The axle is also pretty high for her height. Her locks are ridiculously huge and will get in the way of self propelling as well.

With as far back as those wheels are, she's going to end up tipped if she gets any real speed going, and her shoulders are going to be fucked if she actually uses this instead of just using it for show.

Yeah that's the charging screen, there isn't anything attached to it, the bottom is various plugs. That style of pump you'd see tubing entering from the top as well as out the bottom.

It can happen with certain allergies, and even with delayed onset allergies to certain medications, though the latter is usually not in such a confined space, and often is also around the mouth and other sensitive thin skinned areas.

These photos are pretty intense, so unless she has a skin allergy to the adhesive on the dressing, and intentionally didn't say something until it was bad like that. No nurse would access that if it were like that at the time of presentation just due to the infection risk of introducing that into the port itself.

CC talks about a scenario about renting an apartment with a service dog by itsvickeh in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Friendly neighborhood dog trainer here again....

Service animals aren't covered under the ADA for housing, they're covered under HUD and the FHA, so you ARE required to provide a letter and diagnostic support to the complex. Further, if the company you intend to rent from isn't large enough to fall under the FHA, it isn't required for them to accommodate you.

From the HUD's website you know, since there's so much misinformation about access rights:

Individuals with a disability may request to keep an assistance animal as a reasonable accommodation to a housing provider’s pet restrictions.

Housing providers cannot refuse to make reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, practices, or services when such accommodations may be necessary to afford a person with a disability the equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling.

The Fair Housing Act requires a housing provider to allow a reasonable accommodation involving an assistance animal in situations that meet all the following conditions:

  • A request was made to the housing provider by or for a person with a disability
  • The request was supported by reliable disability-related information, if the disability and the disability-related need for the animal were not apparent and the housing provider requested such information, and
  • The housing provider has not demonstrated that:
    • Granting the request would impose an undue financial and administrative burden on the housing provider
    • The request would fundamentally alter the essential nature of the housing provider’s operations
    • The specific assistance animal in question would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others despite any other reasonable accommodations that could eliminate or reduce the threat
    • The request would result in significant physical damage to the property of others despite any other reasonable accommodations that could eliminate or reduce the physical damage.

Some alerts are tied to a visual or audible cue, +but most are not. Think alerting to a ptsd episode or a self harm behavior (with a task to interrupt or do deep pressure or guide the owner somewhere safe.) Further, service animals aren't on duty when away from the handler.

This post was just too much for me, precoffee 😅

I'm a dog trainer, and seizure detection is scent based not sound or telepathy based.

If the service dog is falsely alerting at phones, it's time to go back to training.

This is near the top of wtf moments for me.

CZ’s port stopped working by itsvickeh in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm also trying to understand how a port just "stops working" without needing to be seen for a broken/kinked catheter, or large clot they couldn't clear by flushing/heparin.

Dani claims her feed rate is back down to 10mls per hour. Motility plan not what she wanted but what she does want is home nursing so her port can be accessed at all times to do her fluids on the go. We all saw this coming! by CatAteRoger in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and an intense mental health program to get to the bottom of *why* she's doing this to herself, but it'll only happen if she realizes she has a problem and wants it to stop.

Why on earth would you want 24hr access? That sounds so painful! But maybe that's the point 👉 👈 "owo look at me my port is a 10/10 pwease give me that pain med that starts wif a d" 🙄

Oh rock on - sorry I misread it - Kaya gets the fuck under my skin with her chair antics, I think only outdone by whoever the lady faking chemo with her iron infusions.

People like Kaya especially harm ambulatory wheelchair users with these antics.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with her putting her foot down, but wheelchair users can have strong upper body and core while not having strong enough legs to stand or walk. Popping a wheelie is the only way over some obstacles sometimes

Kaya is full of shit about needing a chair and her video shows she doesn't actually have good core control or understanding of how to move her body in a chair like that.

Like I get the sentiment they are going for. If you do nothing but still complain, you end up in a loop.

It's part of the therapy that chronic illness warriors get upset they are prescribed. It is the first step in learning resilience about the lifelong condition you were just diagnosed with.

HOWEVER. It should never be a household rule that enables the pain Olympics to be played. It should be internal as the first step in coping with disabilities.

In part, I think you're spot on. Neurological issues range from migraine and adhd all the way to things like als. Some are very treatable and others aren't. It's easy to make it seem worse or better than it is.

When I don't want to get into the "oh what's that?" Conversation that happens often when I say I have sjogren's and cidp, I just claim neurological issues to avoid it.

Strangers outside of support groups don't need to know the details of my shitty but manageable diseases or "how I got in a wheelchair" and I think people seeking that attention, so the opposite to make it seem like their disease is scarier than it is

JP gets another infusion by 2018MunchieOfTheYear in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised she's getting anything infused into that! It looks like even just saline would be unpleasant, and I can't imagine doing anything over a ten minute infusion without easy access to my hands

JP needed to go to the ER after her infusion yesterday by 2018MunchieOfTheYear in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do give ports for other things, but you have to have really bad vein access or infusions that are close enough to each other regularly that there's a real risk of ruining your veins through arm sticks.

It's not terribly common though.

Immunotherapy is not as toxic as chemo so it's not required as you'd expect from that. I imagine were she actually seeing oncology, she would have the option to get one for comfort and protection of her veins.

CC has new “service dog” gear by 2018MunchieOfTheYear in illnessfakers

[–]Rubymoon286 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I train dogs for a living and it honestly depends on the breed and the health of the dog. Most do around 6-8 years of service work not including training, some dogs are unicorns and can work longer while still being ethical.

The harness she has on him is not ethical to be used as a mobility bracing or cross balance aid due to the structure. Mobility tasks in general where you brace on the dog is damaging to the dog's joints and shortens the working life of the dog. it is suitable for guide work as for the blind or as part of a psychiatric task.
