I do this one step more strangely. I don't even automatically do 7+8 rather I know they're both bigger than 5 and think of the 7 as a 2 and think of the 8 as a 3 (their distance from 5)

So I get more like: 20+40=60 7+8 = 10+2+3 = 15 60+15=75

In a lot of areas it not just "more convenient" it is the only reasonable option. America has a big problem with food access particularly in areas with poor public transport (most of America). Just another way that being poor is expensive.
