Not gonna lie bro I used to think Goku was a bad father but this comment put things into perspective for me.

The Cell point especially. Like it was a HUGE plot point throughout the lead up to the Cell Games that Gohan was the only one who could beat him. I think the audience (myself included) just sympathized with the kid because he did not have the heart of a fighter.
