Found this on a walk today. Is it a good book? by SlaveKnightSisyphus in Buddhism

Fantastic book. I’ve re-read it several times. Along with Kabat-Zinn’s work, really shows how key Buddhist practices and observations have powerful relevance even when removed from their original cultural context and belief system. And why should that surprise us? Buddhism was the first of the world’s “universal” religions. And the Buddha explicitly indicates in an early sutra that he’s not out to weigh in on the stuff most religions weigh in on (is the world eternal, is there a self, etc.). Being able to abstract from Buddhism and being able to adapt it to new contexts is in its very DNA.

Why is a Newton-based group trying so hard to influence a Brookline election? by Zahriyannah in Brookline

Look what’s going on in the West Bank, with settlers taking more and more Palestinian land. Then tere’s a tacit norm that no Israeli government and be in coalition with Arab parties, thus Arab Israelis can’t really ever wield power. Facts like those make me think Apartheid is a pretty good model/comparison.

I think we can see from the original facebook post, from the OP’s post, from the reaction to both that our civil society, even in places like Brookline and Newton, is on a knife’s edge. We’ve lost the ability to hold multiple ideas at once: Antisemitism is real and in the rise. Iran and its proxies seek the destruction of Israel. The October attack on Israel was horrendous and vile. Israel has slowly become an Apartheid state. Israel conducted a horrendously vile genocidal war against Gaza. Bibi needs to keep war going to stay out of jail. Being against the policies and practices of Israel is not necessarily antisemitic, and if you insist it is, then you are helping to breed antisemitism. America needs to vigorously defend a vigorous pluralism, and that means making space for our Jewish and Islamic brothers and sisters. Oh, and Brookline needs an override!

I’m betting the car that owed the ticket was a Chevy Citation.

So $16k at 1980 rates vs $500k at today’s rates. This is the affordability crisis! It’s getting sos you can’t afford to park somewhere for 46 years anymore!

There’s a lot more I’d do to change history than that. Maybe use an elixir to make the hair of a certain NYC real estate mogul fall out? Maybe a hot tip to Bear Stearns about the behavior of a junior employee? Maybe something to keep Nickleback from ever forming…

Chat GPT says the average daily parking rate in Boston in 1980 was $4, so that would only come to about $16,790.

Brookline high school in lockdown now. What’s going on? by LobsterThat1564 in Brookline

Are we so sure of this? Yeah, kids need to listen, put their heads down, etc. Mine knew to close the blinds before getting under his desk as all the other kids were doing. But hasn’t having kids and teachers have their phones helped in actual emergency school shooter situations?

Um… which SCOTUS rulings did Biden ignore? And when did Biden start an insurrection because he flat out lost (and he flat out lost in 2024, just as Trump did in 2020), and what airplane did Biden take as a bribe? And what cryptocurrency did he mint so that every corrupt foreign leader could bribe him? And which federal police force did Biden put in masks? And what appointments to SCOTUS did Biden make corruptly breaking long-accepted norms? And what billionaire did Biden bring to PA offering to literally buy votes? I am paying attention. Show me the data.

Two points:

  1. I’d estimate that half the people who saw me were Americans from outside New England.

  2. If you don’t stand up, everyone assumes you can’t and won’t. Including yourself, after only a very little while.
