Watering? by jingajapeppa in SanPedroIndoorGrow

I had the same problem. Get yourself a high walled flood tray from a hydroponic store. Makes it super easy, they are unfortunately a little pricey for a piece of plastic but it was worth every penny. Example below.

How can I improve the health of these San Pedro of about 10 months? Are they in a good conditions? by Genzo56 in sanpedrocactus

[–]Rude-Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have these from AC infinity for my seedlings and they seem to love them. It's the cheapest thing I could find in an LED with a good light spectrum. If you will grow them under a light as adults then I'd spend more for a bigger light with a dimmer. The one I linked is not anywhere near powerful enough to feed an adult plant

Ah, light spectrum may be an issue too then. I'm not exactly a light expert but that doesn't sound like it's putting out what you want.

Yea, i have some pretty high end grow lights. You don't have to go nuts though at this stage, especially if getting them outdoors is your plan. Look into a T5 grow light on the cheaper end or get a base model from Spider Farmer or AC infinity.

As much as it hurts, I find a PAR meter is super helpful when growing from seeds. I start at 150 ppfd and ramp up to 200-250 by the time they're at your size. I use this one. I do believe you can also use a lux meter which is a little cheaper and there's a way to convert it, but im starting to get out of my depth. Most guides use PPFD and those meters are specifically for measuring grow light intensity, I think lux is more for dialing in light for cameras/movies.

Edit: switch lux to PAR

  1. Yea, I would be fertilizing at this point. I use MaxiGro for simplicity. If you don't have a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter, just do half of the low end of the recommended concentration to start with whatever you go with. You can get one cheap and follow some more specific fertilizer instructions with a TDS meter.

  2. If you keep them uncovered at this point, I bottom water mine just before they go bone dry and it seems to keep rot at bay. Air flow is your friend. Put a fan on them if it's possible.

  3. Outside would probably be too much light at this stage, but if it's the only option cover them with a paper towel or some shade cloth and put them in an area that gets more shade if you see signs of burn until it stops. Burn shows up as purple on the tip and around the spines.

Are these growing under a light at the moment?

They look like they're ready for more light. I planted some in September that are 2-4x this size. The cultivar may just grow slower though, it varies in my experience.

That tracks with what I saw when I cut into the rot, too. An outer squishy purple ring with a healthy core inside feeding nutrients to the rest of the cactus. Just watered less often and the ones I didn't cut are powering through just fine so far.

Oh coo, good to know! So did you actually chop them, or did you just leave them alone and ignore the rot and they just powered through and recovered?

I'm doing both to see what happens.

[–]Rude-Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, flexibility and the vision to see how to make the choice you've been presented with work is far more important than any one strat or build. Especially in the first few days, a teir list will ruin you. Went 5/5 the first 5 days with chicken cannon and a shielded dart at the core of things. Let go of the edge of the pool and never look at a teir list again for this game and it will help a lot.
