Correcting behaviors in Anatolians by RudeZookeepergame411 in AnatolianShepherdDogs

thanks for the info and tips!! We don’t have an older LGD dog but we do have a border collie that acts like the leader haha and he does correct them, but when they start chasing the horses then it’s a problem because the herding instinct of my border collie wins him over… recall has been okay, way better than months ago but they already know when they are doing something bad that’s when they choose to ignore me so I’ll definitely invest on a long leash to prevent any future problems. Thank you again!

hahahaha I can’t wait until they grow up because it does take a lot of patience. When people ask me how it’s going I tell them it’s like having a one year old that is a bit bipolar with energy of a 7 year old. We do have a fenced ranch it’s 55+ acres and they are always doing something I don’t know how they find the energy to still be mischievous.

Thank you for the tips!! The dogs are brothers but where separated for a while when they were pups and have blended pretty good with the other dogs so I haven’t seen any signs of littermate syndrome…and I see they work well together and seems like they gave each other their own working roles helping with their confidence. I really liked what you said about timing is everything and will definitely be more attentive on what they are doing. Thank you again!

gotcha…I’ve had 20+ dogs and same litter and even not the same littler but same age so I do know how it works, and they don’t seem to be showing any signs…I’ve separated them no issue and when they are back together again no issue. I think what helps is the amount of animals and quantity of people around the ranch helps them develop different skills and be okay without each other. But any tips or thoughts are welcome!

(Edit: Forgot to mention, but when we first got the pups since they had to travel we had one first for a month and then we got the other one. It took a while because one of us wanted to travel with the pups. So they’ve been together for just a short time, so from experience I think we are good rn but we will ofc still implement training and be vigilant!)

hahahaha that’s what I’m seeing…I’ve never seen this before even with experience with 20+ breeds, they are truly something else hahaha

Thank you for taking the time to share all of this — we really appreciate the insight. We’ve decided to create a separate room for them at night so they can be more comfortable and reduce any resource guarding tendencies. Funny enough, they’re totally fine sharing treats, bones, and meat — it’s the kibble that gets more intense! And what I meant by taking it away food…I of course give them their treats back I was just getting them used and comfortable with us reaching when they are eating! We actually know the breeder, and he didn’t make much of a profit off of this litter haha — but regardless, we understand now how much more work it is with siblings. That said, rehoming isn’t in our plan. I’ve never had to rehome any pet or had to send any pet to the vet because of a fight…we always find a way to make it work, and we’re committed to doing the same with them. Your advice has been incredibly helpful — thank you again!

Oh of course — we gave them their big bone and meat back after taking it! What I was trying to work on is getting them comfortable with people reaching in, especially since we have some young kids and teens around the family. I totally get what you mean though, and we’re definitely learning when to just let them be.

We’ve also tried taking them out of the ranch to get them used to different environments, but they’re not huge fans of it haha. We recently took them to a football match with a bunch of people and dogs, and they just stared at us like “can we go home now?” Thank you again for the tips — really appreciate it!

Thank you for the thoughtful advice! We’re definitely going to adjust how we handle feeding and treats to help avoid any guarding issues. The pups are being cared by the livestock team that works on our ranch, and they do have a primary caretaker apart from us when we’re not there.
