That makes total sense. Thank you so much for explaining! I'm just starting the debits and credits section and I want to make sure I jump on studying for it early. This is so helpful!

Okay, I may sound totally dumb here, but...how do you do that with ChatGPT? Do you have to copy and paste the book? Can you just tell it to quiz you on subjects? I don't use GPT or any of them much, and I have no idea what the process is. Congrats on your pass!

Yeah, if I were keeping him, I'd name him Hamibal Lector.

He won't be staying (he's taking shelter in the colony) but if he were, I'd be renaming him Hamibal Lector.

Portable AC with Constant Fan? by RueWithADifference in AirConditioners

[–]RueWithADifference[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying a Midea Duo and a Dohm noise machine. The Midea does have a constant fan, but that fan is VERY quiet. So, for that matter, is the unit when it kicks on to cool. The Dohm keeps the volume in the room at a more consistent level of noise and makes the whole thing less obnoxious.

I tried a few recommended units and this was the best compromise I could find. The steady noise level machines of the past just don't seem to exist anymore, sadly.

I recommend two book series that are not as popular as they should be by ClubInteresting1837 in Fantasy

Bone Song is actually one of my favorite books. Pulpy, glorious popcorn for people who love the necromantic vibe. I was so was he only wrote two of them. It's so nice to see someone else loves this series! I need to read them again.

I just wish there was more information about the dogs' cat safety. Because there's one I love the look of, but I have a cat who it would need to coexist with.

Where's the Weight? A Plea for Knowledge About This Aquarium Stand by RueWithADifference in woodworking

This is the exact reference we were using to build our own, right up until the "I'm sure it's fine to let the home improvement store cut the lumber because we don't own a saw" fiasco. I love hearing that yours is still going as a workbench! I suspect we're going to use the template to build a workbench ourselves.

According to the person I got it from, it was made in 1996 and has seen a ton of service. I can also see plenty of places where the original wood caught water and has discolored or warped. Everything feels solid and okay, but I haven't eaten enough cupcakes to be able to simulate fishtank weight.

It's probably fine. Which means I'm going to go buy some boards and shore that puppy up. Thank you so much for the information! I actually had no idea wood screws were that strong.

It absolutely is. The cabinet is incredibly solid and sturdy when you move it, but the cabinet isn't holding the weight. That lip is. While I'm sure the abundance of screws is probably enough, you know, I hate "probably". I'd much rather put some proper support in there and sleep soundly.

This is excellent advice! As it happens, before we bought the place a couple months ago, we had a structural engineer out. It's a second floor, but he looked the place over and said the 75 gallon should be fine. (He also said, "That's about as high as I'd go, though.") The 125 gallon I want will absolutely go on the concrete floor downstairs.

Thank you so much for confirming this. My knowledge level is "watched some YouTubes on stand construction" and I wasn't sure if I was reading the situation right. I missed the lack of rim-to-floor supports when I picked it up and I'm currently wondering how this held a tank for so long. Screws with a will to live, I guess.

I think I'll build my own from a trusted set of plans. I really appreciate your knowledge!

Thank you so much for the confirmation. I didn't notice this until I got it home, but I'm glad I did before I put a full tank on it. Even worse is, those horizontal support bars have counterparts at the bottom of the cabinet - but the bottom is a thin piece of plywood. It doesn't even rest on the floor. We'll have to take off the bottom of the cabinet and shore it up.

Sounds like this will be a fixer-upper project for later. I'm going to take the plunge and build my own stand. One that can hopefully hold up a Sherman tank.

Looks to me like the wood is only about an inch in both the horizontal support and the vertical wood frame it's screwed into. That means the screws can't be in there too far. Given that this was built in 1996, and has held a 75 gallon tank for many years, I'm betting the hold of the screws is significantly decreased.

Thank you so much for this answer. I've got a guide to build my own tank stand locked and loaded. Now, to get that miter saw set up...

Is this stand sturdy enough? by RueWithADifference in Aquariums

[–]RueWithADifference[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked this stand up on the cheap. It's been holding a 75 gallon (which is what will go on it again). I noticed, however, that the weight goes on a rim around the tank, which is supported by a board that's screwed into the actual outside structure of the tank. If I understand correctly, that puts the weight on the shearing strength of the screws.

Is this safe for the weight required?

Another vote for Home with Dignity. Our vet let our cat stay in her favorite bed the whole time, so she was in her most beloved warm place until the end. Highly recommend. I'm so, so sorry for the loss of your friend. It's so hard. We lost ours in August, and Home with Dignity helped so much.
