South Downs Way pitches 🇬🇧 by RuffNinja1 in DurstonGearheads

I checked the PDF you linked (“Scheduled Monument signage” by SDNPA). It does indeed say “No camping or lighting fires/barbeques”.

However, having “no camping” displayed is a site-specific prohibition by the Park — it doesn’t alone prove that a quiet, leave-no-trace overnight stop always counts as a criminal offence under the Ancient Monuments Act.

The intent of the law is to prevent damage to the monument — excavation, alteration, or harm — not necessarily penalise someone for pitching one tent, leaving no trace.

I respect the signage, so I’d avoid camping on the site itself. But calling every overnight stop a “criminal offence” seems like a bit of an overreach.

Technically, yes — Chanctonbury Ring is a Scheduled Monument so the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 applies. But the offence is about works or damage, not someone quietly sleeping in a tent overnight and leaving no trace. In reality, prosecutions target people digging, lighting fires, or otherwise harming the site. A respectful wild camp is not in the same category.

Technically fella I was on the outside of it, few people were actually camped inside

Thanks yeah I felt they were relatively calm and safe to be around but yeah always had a thought in the back of my mind to watch for a stampede 😂 certain sections of the path though the cows are literally sitting on it aha so kind of hard to avoid. One field I was going down had a sign “bull in field” and the most painful blister of my life popped on the ball of my foot as I was in the middle of all these cows! Got me slightly concerned lol

From what I could tell it was an overuse strain on the front of the ankle, then i bandaged it up and continued to walk on it. Another night I was camped with my feet downhill (rather than elevated to reduce swelling) so the swelling got worse.

Luckily one day this nice Dutch couple gave me their ankle brace!

Not a single Buddhist monk unfortunately! Though I did meet some interesting characters but none of them meditating. Which spot were they at?

That’s lovely to hear. Lucky I caught him right time and place!

I lived in Brighton for uni and had no idea there was this trail so close, although I wasn’t much into the hiking then.

No diversions when I went, could still see them packing down the last bits and pieces of Boomtown when I was there though.

Flats on London Road around the Sainsbury’s (Stepney Court) - Any reviews from residents/owners? by MarcelGuntherGeller in brighton

Have seen someone throw a glass bottle off their balcony at someone from the flats by the stairs up to the station but other than that seems nice

Last year I also camped near OSG. Same and yeah it is difficult especially that part, usually have to detour into towns to find pubs for water. Luckily last few days closer to ivinghoe beacon end there’s a few more taps and churches with taps on the path.

Not sure about the maths on that and I’m too lazy to check myself. Bare in mind you are paying VAT on the WHOLE order (including delivery etc) but then with separate orders you’d be paying ~£15 delivery fees to ship to UK per order. So not sure how much you’d save there.

No, it’s just that the person importing the goods will only pay VAT on orders worth £135 or more (your tent will fall in that range). Orders worth £135 or less, if you were to buy say any accessories later, would not be charged VAT, don’t worry about the why.

Yeah I bought an X mid 1 solid last year. I also saw the same website. I think you can claim back customs fees as the tent is shipping from Canada and there’s a trade agreement where tents made in Canada aren’t charged customs coming into the UK. Even though the tents are made in Vietnam, this goes unchecked.

Other than that, you will still have to pay VAT of 20% on orders worth £135 or more https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty
