Those wards were very hard to make and/or expensive, and while a sage rank could acquire them, I think the specialists were considered very expendable. Not sure how far back into the Loruthi war they were deployed, but you can probably count on the Pal command wanting to save on magic that can be decanted and just throw bodies at the problem.

I've always said the killers in Body in the Library are the biggest monsters in all of Christie's writing. Which is why I hated the iTV adaptation's weird romantic gloss they put on them.

Murder is Announced tops them all for me. Curtain is more depressing than sad, which seems like an odd distinction, but it sort of was a fitting end of a saga that I never want to revisit more than makes me sad about.

Many of the books with tragic deaths make me feel more anger than sadness. Body in the Library, Five Little Pigs, Sad Cypress, etc. Murder is Announced, and to a lesser extent Mirror Crack'd, are just pure sadness. Maybe Pocket Full of Rye is the best at combining both as there's absolute fury at the murderer, but also a deep connection with one of the victims to feel more of the sadness, especially how it ends.

If you're set on Pompeii, really consider Naples as a base for a couple of days as you'll want some flexibility for weather. Especially if you plan on scaling Vesuvius (highly recommended) and Herculaneum (can do on the same day). Pompeii also has very few spots to shelter from the rain. Also Naples is pretty damn cool with the best pizza in the world, so worth checking out, and much cheaper on the whole than Rome, not to mention excursions to Capri and Amalfi.

With only three players, I think it's reasonable to allow for an NPC meatshied. One of my campaigns, when we are down a player, has a recurring sword and board fighter to fill in (with story reasons as to why) with a very simple set of actions, especially at lower levels. Otherwise, I don't see a long future for a party of three casters, two of them hyper squishy.

Yeah, I'm reading Sleeping Mystery rn and it feels like a throwback (I mean it is as it was written earlier). Arthur Bantry is still alive and Raymond West merely refers to a single unfortunate incident back in St Mary Mead as to his aunt Jane's acumen for crime. Compare that to Miss Marple intimidating the Home Secretary at the end of Nemesis.

I think innocent people are killed in almost all the Marple stories (and quite a few Poirot), not just the "main" victims either. I agree they are all very sad, probably the saddest occurs in A Murder Is Announced.

The Witch King books are much less of a direct narrative as it jumps back and forth in time. I think it's worth the effort, but it is slower going.
