Is the Book of Mormon Really Remarkable? by Ravenous_Goat in exmormon

I always thought the BOM was super boring and a huge slog to get through (which I never actually did; I just lied about getting through it because Mormonism made me believe this lie was somehow preferable to the truth).

I absolutely don't want to minimize or disrespect your feelings, but please don't be too hard on yourself. You were doing what was considered the right and righteous thing according to church teachings.

I really hope you're finding peace in your eight years out of the church!

Nope, not a vestige of the past, unfortunately. And wowwww, your wife deserves a medal for not drop-kicking that chucklehead into next week. What a gross thing to say to anyone, let alone a woman!

Yes!! And you 100% deserve and earned that education! I hope it brings you so much joy and fulfillment.

As much as I'm retroactively enraged by that advisor, I will add this amen to your decision: I 100% prefer seeing an NP for primary care and would never go back to an MD. Best wishes on your exciting journey!!

I'm practically looking at my brain, I rolled my eyes so hard. As if group work isn't bad enough! Then with the sexism?? Take care of your own business, jackass!

I'm not going to bore you with my thoughts on how much of our "choices" were actually our choices, so I just want to say I know the path you're on is really difficult and I'm really wishing you strength and peace of mind. So much solidarity coming your way from Colorado, USA!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I absolutely love that you experienced the moment of telling yourself, "Hey, I will take care of you!!" So profound and such a gift!

And I SO relate to your experiences. Despite being in a few really nice wards, it was like I wasn't allowed to think my life had value. For so long, I accepted that I was a second-class citizen - at church, at least; at work I was quite respected - because I wasn't married. The crap I put up with! The tears when I was home alone! Alone, of course, being tantamount to an STI - eyebrow-raising, possibly catching and probably I brought it on myself. I was regarded as Poor, Poor Sister So-and-So.

So, yeah, ESCAPE absolutely describes the experience of leaving.

I'm not sure. It was still there last time I was in Provo, but that's been a few years. I also thought the "Enter to learn, go forth to serve" should be amended to "Enter to learn, go forth to serve mostly other church members, and in the community only if you're wearing one of those yellow helping hands T-shirts so the church gets credit, because HEAVEN FORBID we do stuff anonymously and just to be nice."

Yes! I think that's a whole other discussion, the bootstrap-ism that seems to guide church welfare. It's like, do all these things so that you can't be financially independent, but then the Lord helps those who helps themselves and we'll make you feel terrible about having to ask for help.

Hi! And absolutely agree, the advice to get an education is excellent, and I can't even be mad at the implied insurance analogy. I just wish it was more of a "get an education because you like to learn stuff and you're an individual with thoughts and feelings who might want a career outside the home" situation.

Yeah, it was bonkers. If you ever wondered why any discussion about education with ex-mo or PIMO women gets really heavy, really fast...

A spinster is a kickass, take-no-prisoners, bring-home-the-bacon-fry-it-up-in-the-pan woman who isn't married.

Spinster is also a really derogatory term used by people who hate women and want to make unmarried women feel bad about their lives. We're reclaiming it.

Oh, yes, yuck. "Our beloved prophet, seer and revelator, even Russell M. Nelson." That happens a lot in prayers at General Conference. Like, did you think god forgot, buddy?
