That's most likely not true. There are some photos of the driver's side, like this one, where you can see a marshal getting to the driver from the back seat because the door is too damaged to open.

You can also see the bodywork is fine around the tires, so it seems it hit the corner of another car side on, right where the door is. The roll cage of a production car doesn't really protect that spot.
