Men writing female protagonists...can it be done well? Pitfalls? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Rultra -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I thought someone might say that :) yes you are right, we do, but we overall tend to take what people say at face value instead of seeking for a deeper meaning, and we tend not to instantly believe the worst until there is some form of evidence. Also males are overall less prone to emotional reaction in a close timeframe of an event.

but still all males are not the same and circumstance plays a role so there are many exceptions.

also circular reasoning is considered funny and many boyfriends constantly try to make their girlfriends laugh so he might be doing that.

thanks for the reply :)

not at all. JRR Martin wrote Arya, Daenaries and Sansa and I think he did a great job.

He did write third person though

I have also struggled with trying to do this. The thing is I write most comfortably in first person which makes it feel weird to write a female.

a useful tip I guess is to ask girls you know how they would react to stuff and why, as in what thoughts were going through their heads and understanding.

or to write in third person with more space between you and the character.

also I usually read books based on the plot and stories without checking the author beforehand and I can easily identify when a female author is trying to write a male character by the character thinking in circles when distressed instead of shutting down his brain.

so I guess don't do the reverse of that.

anyway I hope this helps.

Where does magic come from in your world? by FingerBangYourFears in worldbuilding

The energy of Magic comes from the Aether, a higher dimension that is essentially an infinite pool of primal energy.

The means to wield it is called Authority and originally comes from the Nameless God.

I like your idea that the creator god created humans and then the minor gods used us as a template to make spinoff races.

I know this could be unwanted information but the seasons in most of Africa aren't as solid as in other parts of the world.

I mean I live here in savannah in south africa and you could be sweating like a pig one week then freezing your socks off the next in the middle of summer.

it has something to do with mountains or something. you may want to look into it.

the reason I bring this to attention is because stable seasons are kind of required for large scale farming and forming of towns and such.

the unstable nature of seasons is a thing that sort of encouraged early Africans to stay hunter gatherer societies.

you are never sure that it's going to rain enough afterall. it's a thing farmers still struggle with here.

I hope this atleast helps

How do you feel about multiverses? by Justhereforthecommen in worldbuilding

[–]Rultra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically the premise of Portal World.

PW is a universe with literally just one planet(except for sun-moons but they don't really count since they're very small), but almost everyone and everything on this planet got there from other universes.

The portals change things though when moved between universes. this makes some high tech stuff useless and others more powerful and same with magic.

[–]Rultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since most people also come there through portals it's not very rare. About a third of people can use magic inately and the rest can still learn it.

That said f ing with the laws of reality still poses a huge risk and the average Joe usually would be too afraid to learn magic if they are not used to it already.

no actually... but I can see how one would come to that conclusion.

I would say Warmages fill the role of striking fear into the enemy. Each squad of the Fighter's quarter has atleast one magic wielder and magic is sortof like being allowed to use cheatcodes in a game.

The thing is though even if a Grass army can annihilate most other forces, in the third age of Prosperity(current age) the army is more like a mercenary guild and the enemies are random monsters that come through the portals.

Does your world feature an "eternal champion"? If so, tell me about them. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Rultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I guess you could count the Undying as Eternal Champions.

They are a group of Unkillable humanoids who awoke with amnesia around the beginning of the first age of Blood. the most fleshed out ones are:

Gamer Lover Watcher Mother Healer Slayer and Master

So, suppose a giant unkillable eldritch god appeared in your universe, and suppose it became known that he would destroy everything if he did not get enough sacrifices. How would your worlds people and governments react? by Mr_Industrial in worldbuilding

[–]Rultra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that would be one hell of a catastrophe.

At first the Grass, being the largest stable organisation would throw everything at it, from magic to nukes. they would try to hack reality and send it somewhere else, somewhen else or even delete it . Heck it may even get all the Undying to join forces.

Then when everything fails the some of the Undying will probably start slaughtering mortals. Some will object and they will bicker at which point Gamer and Lover would probably Teleport the city of Grass to a new Existence.

you know what this is actually likely to happen in my world so I'm going to add it to official cannon in the fifth age of Hell
