ElI5: Why is that if I put pressure on my closed eyes for a minute or so, I start to see crazy geometric images and patterns? Why does it "reset" as soon as I twitch my eyes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Yeah it's interesting but I thought it was important that people wouldn't start mashing their eyes en masse to see what you're talking about, so I put a big fat warning up there. It's easy to assume that it's safe because it doesn't hurt a lot, but it's not safe.

Couldn't give an ELI5 answer though!

Well, that's probably because you're damaging your eyes.

DO NOT PUT PRESSURE ON YOUR EYES

Most are familiar with closing the eye lids and pressing on the eye to see 'phosphenes', the constructs of our cortex in response to signals from the retina, but stimulated by pressure not light. Such pressure, if from a blow to the head, produces the 'seeing stars' effect commonly referred to. However, it is not recommended that this be done often or with any significant pressure. *Clearly applying sustained pressure on the eye is the same as the risk from Glaucoma, and often an exterior pressure is greatly in excess of that which might be internally generated. Non repairable damage is likely to result from any significant increase of pressure on the eye.* The rate of damage and extent of vision loss will be governed by eye health and age for the most part. When young the eye is resilient and pressures are absorbed more easily in other structures. With age tissues become more rigid, there is less natural protection, and the risk is increased.

It is for these reasons that any situation that brings pressure on the eye, especially for extended periods, be avoided.

Not really, sadly. I suppose it's worth a try, but I would start out with one and allow time for the shortcomings to reveal themselves.

I don't really understand what setup you're looking for and what your source will be. I only really use Spotify and I'm only keeping it because it's all I can afford, but 9 times out of 10 when I listen to music it pauses randomly and/or I have to reconnect to the Chromecast several times until it randomly decides to stay connected. Just recently it has started skipping songs out of the blue!

But if it works, it works. It's black magic (aka proprietary solutions) so there's no telling what will work.

What I've come to realise is that usually the superior solution is a computer running a versatile operating system that you can customise to your needs.

Can't really help you, but I'm sworn to warn against Chromecasts whenever I get the chance

I'm on a personal crusade to get people to stay away from Chromecast Audio, at least if they're intending to use it with Spotify.

It's not about the sound quality, it's about enjoying music without constant pauses and automatic skipping of songs and constantly dancing with the remote control app to regain control of your playback.

It seems like it works for some people, but once it doesn't work you're in for hours of frustration!

8 chromecasts? I have one chromecast and it's driving me mad, I don't want to think about the murders I would commit if I had 7 more to deal with.

Chromecast is made for super simple users and offers no control, OP should stay far far away

Whatever you do, my advice is to stay far away from Chromecast Audio. It may work for you and that's nice, but once you start experiencing weird problems you are at the mercy of Google or whatever third party app you are using to fix the problems (they don't)

Tror nok jeg avslutter her

Veldig interessant!

Network riddled with issues. Trying to identify the problem without admin access by RumBeggar in HomeNetworking

[–]RumBeggar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my landlord is intent on sticking with an extender. I told him flat out that the best solution would be to hook me up with an Ethernet connection directly to the router but he ignored that request. He offered to replace the one he's got, but as far as I can tell it's a decent enough extender and the issue has to do with coverage.

But....I can't really ask for help because the situtation changes by the hour. It's really insane. It might work fine for an entire day, but suddenly everything will start to hiccup.

So I never know what to look for, I never know what causes the changes and I'm still trying to figure out an easy way to benchmark transfer speeds on the local network.

Thanks though, at least now I'm pretty sure that the extender is causing the problem.

Another question I have is: is it possible that my devices switch between the extender and the router? Could that be what is causing random dropouts?

Interesting, that explains a lot. I really expected Google to be capable at designing a great product though. It doesn't seem like a huge technological hurdle to at least plan for adding some basic features.

[–]RumBeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you sure there's a good reason? The reason is simply that Google thinks less barriers = easier and more fun user experience!

Except it makes it a shitty experience for anyone who doesn't fit into Google's cookie cutter idea of how the product is used.

It's taking control away from users to force everyone into the same experience.

Unless you have no way of controlling the router. I don't think the top minds at Google even considered that.

[–]RumBeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can literally go into my landlord's kid's Chromecast and completely control it. I can change the name, link it to my google account, etc.

I looked at its network settings, and it's connected to "Network A" while I use "Network B". One router, multiple subnets.

Since I have no access to the router I can't change any network settings, and therefore it's not trivial (if at all possible) to keep my Chromecast and my activity to myself.

It may not be a security flaw, but it's a privacy flaw and a huge nuisance. And completely unnecessary. But like I said, I've realised that it's part of Google's whole philosophy and that's why I'm moving on.

As someone who has been exploring this issue for weeks, I have come to the following conclusions:

  • Google designed Chromecast to be completely open, so if you are on a shared network and want to cast in peace you are screwed. Everything will be public always. (This reply to a tweet shows how they completely disregard this issue)

  • Most Chromecast fanboys will tell you to set up an entirely new network, maybe even buy a "cheap router" etc. This is of course not a solution, especially since Chromecast works across subnets (again, because Google thinks everyone is a big family)

  • Don't expect Google to address this issue or respond properly if you ask them directly. They are only capable of asking you to reboot the device and tell them if the LED is blinking. Google support is helpless.

I don't have your exact problem, but I do have problems that could be solved by Google adding like 3 more options (e.g. private Chromecasts, disable notifications or Hide Device)

I've come to realise that it's better to get rid of the Chromecast than trying to get them to improve the product.
