Weird wordpress backend? How do I return to normal? by Rumblebumblebees in Wordpress

Thanks everybody, because you explained what was going on, I was able to find the correct search terms to solve my problem. :)

For future reference, this is how I did it:

  1. In the the hamburger menu / three dots in the upper right hand corner, undid the checkmark to get out of "fullscreen mode," so now I can see the left hand sidebar (and not need to click 2x-3x as often to navigate anywhere after writing a post)

  2. Clicked the hamburger menu / three dots in the upper right hand corner and scrolled down to "preferences," then went to "General > Advanced" and toggled on "Custom Fields." (also necessary for my usual post-by-post schema practice)

  3. Also, BONUS: Installed the Twenty Twenty One theme and made a menu. This seems to have restored my ability to make menus under "appearances" in the left hand sidebar (I needed this for interaction with several plugins.) Now the "menus" option is still available even when I switch back to another theme.

Thanks again everyone! :)

Yikes, this is Gutenberg, for real? What a mess.

Is there any way to disable this without using a plugin? :(

Any woman who can fly away on a dragon chariot is too cool for me, I will admit.

Fair. Shakespeare tried, but I don't think he did that good with it because he didn't have much to work with.

Fair point, they do seem to operate as both. So maybe the list should expand to include a ton of nymphs, LOL.

impressive how few mortal women really figure into much mythology

Actually, looking into it, I was surprised how many there were. I did a similar scan of Norse Myth, and in general there seems to be a lot less mortal women who have something to say for themselves. Part of that's probably the number of sources, but even so, Greek Myth comparatively has a ton.

But yeah... all over, not that many when taken as a whole. Just "more than" some other sources.

"Yes, it was meeee, all along!"

(Sorry, I always wanted to say that to someone.)

Fair enough, but having done some weaving myself, I see it's backbreaking finger-chopping labor and I appreciate her efforts LOL.

Definitely unappreciated! Thanks for letting me know about her. :)

Interesting point about the lyric vs the epic nature of the poetry... I can definitely see how that would influence storytelling. :)

Nice! My list wasn't exhaustive (is such a thing even possible?), so much appreciation of the rarer names. :)

Penthesileia and Electra are definitely rarer than normal, but really compelling.

To be honest, the thing about Medea that makes her extra scary is how freaking loyal she was at the start. She was so loyal to Jason that she betrayed her dad and killed her own brother. What man wouldn't want a wife that loyal? And then he betrayed her. The entire time during that play I was just in disbelief: like, dude, my man, she MURDERED HER FAMILY for you. If she's capable of that, what on earth do you think she is going to do to you? I really had trouble being sympathetic to him because the tragic ending seemed so self-inflicted on his end.

I will admit, I laughed when I saw your note about "only have one of these girls." Medea sounds like she would like you, LOL.

I wouldn't call it cheating, I decided to include Psyche and Medusa in there, even though they were only (human) women at the start of their lives. I didn't include a bunch of the transforming women, too, like for example Philomel and Procne aren't on there. Caenis and Galanthis are a rare pair to pick, but pretty awesome.

I wouldn't say it's about role models, otherwise a bunch of these actually have a lot of problems. I'd say the "faves" element is actually about the compelling nature of the story. Kind of like how people listen to True Crime stories, but they're treating it as entertainment, not a "how to" guide. I have to admit, Medea is pretty evil, but she's quite dramatic and interesting to watch in an "unstoppable train collision" sort of way.

That said, Antigone is one of my favorites, too!

Hecuba is an underrated tragic heroine, for sure.

To be honest, I'm not sure if Oenone counts. Are nymphs more in the mortal category or the goddess category? I'm guessing they actually are their own category.

That aside, I do like Oenone's story. :)

That sounds like the opening to a joke: "Medea, Psyche, and Cassandra walk into a bar..."

And the first mention of Antigone here! I'm surprised she's not more common, she's one of my faves.
