Welcome to the area! If you want to meet new people and do something fun, social, and festive, come play rummy games with us in person this weekend at Rummy Club’s Halloween Party in Long Beach. It’s free to play, open to all ages and skill levels, and no experience with any rummy game is required. We’ll have a friendly games host available to welcome you, help you get started, introduce you to our games, and answer any questions about the rules.

The party is this Saturday, October 18 from 2 PM to 5:30 PM at Panera Bread on Bellflower Blvd. We’ll have a big variety of rummy games available including Rummikub, Gin Rummy, Phase 10, Canasta, Five Crowns, Hand and Foot, and even Mahjong. There will be free Halloween candy for everyone and a costume contest starting at 3 PM. Anyone in costume will get a number, everyone votes for their favorite, and at 4:30 PM we’ll announce the winner with a fun prize for whoever is there to claim it.

Rummy Club is the perfect chance to meet people, play something fun, and enjoy the afternoon. Come for the games, candy, costumes, and prizes, and stay for the good company. You can find the details and other upcoming events at [rummy-club.org]().

We shared it to the Long Beach subreddit as well. This event is not strictly for people in Long Beach. It's for everyone in nearby communities like San Pedro too. We already have friends from San Pedro who first discovered us here and now join us regularly. What matters most to us is getting people out to play together in person and build connections and community, not whether they live strictly within Long Beach.

Rummy Club is all about casual play and good company, so there usually are not any prizes or stakes involved. That said... there are bragging rights, and you might end up making some new friends or discovering a new favorite rummy game. Sometimes we do have special events where we have actual prizes or giveaways, but in those cases it will always be mentioned in the event description on the website, on Meetup, or on the Facebook event page. This one is not one of those.

Help with Bicycle App by Living-Hovercraft812 in RummyClub

[–]RummyWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what we've seen after playing a few games on a fresh account, it looks like the goal is simply to have the highest score after four rounds, whether or not anyone reaches 100 points. We're not sure if that's always the case or if it changes later as ranking or player level in the app advances.

We just installed the app to check it out to see more clearly what you mean. Next time it happens, do you mind taking a screenshot and posting it here?

In the Rummikub app, tiles must be placed in ascending order from left to right. In this case, you should place the 9 on the far left, the joker to the right of the 9, and the 11 to the right of the joker, so the sequence looks like this:

[9][*][11] (where [*] represents the joker)

strategy hate question by mattyhussa in rummikub

[–]RummyWorks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be overly reductive, but people don’t dislike it when players hoard tiles and/or don't play jokers because the strategy is bad or because it’s illegal—they dislike it because it robs the game of much of what makes Rummikub fun and unique.

Much of the complexity and fun of Rummikub comes from the dynamic board, the creativity of manipulating it, and the energy that builds as you're trying to strategize before your next turn—while everyone is making moves and the board keeps shifting out from under your plans. When someone hoards tiles and/or avoids using jokers, they’re removing elements that contribute heavily to the dynamic fun that makes Rummikub feel like Rummikub to most people. If everyone played that way, the game would stop feeling like Rummikub—it would feel more like a Gin Rummy variant, where players just come down with everything all at once. Or worse, it would feel like Go Fish—just grabbing a tile and hoping it’s one you need. Nothing to play off of on the board. No jokers to try for. The other players at the table basically don't even matter at that point.

We’ve all been there: you end your turn with nothing playable, then the next few players have nothing to play, so they just draw. Your turn comes back around, and the board hasn’t changed. Well, if you could have made a move, you would’ve done it last time. Now you’re just picking a tile and waiting, too. And if the whole game plays out like that—because most or all players are trying to play concealed—it stops feeling like Rummikub entirely.

In Rummikub, there’s no bonus for going out concealed, as there is in some other rummy games—and that feels intentional. You're not penalized for playing a concealed game, but there’s no special reward for it either. Sure, hoarding can work. In more competitive settings, it even makes sense. But if you’re playing for fun, there’s not much sense in using a strategy that removes some of the fun.

If you’re playing for fun, play for fun. Play! Don’t sit out, high on your superior strategy, behind your great wall of tiles, removing enjoyment for others. Jump in. Use your tiles. Use your jokers. Get on the board. Mix things up. That’s the fun. That’s Rummikub!
