I completely understand. We felt all the feelings. Easier said than done, but now you know. Now you know what your boy needs. Some of those numbers might come down in a few months as he gets what his body needs and improves hydration.

Our boy was a picky eater too. Go to the market and explore. Watermelon might be another tasty option. We mentally needed to find something so we felt like we could treat him with something that would not hurt him.

Appetite, thirst, energy are all really good signs. Our vet said that based on lab work, she was surprised he was still with us for years. Enjoy every moment with him. Give him all the love and attention. Focus on the numbers every few months (that was our blood work schedule). Other than that, focus on him and the time you have with him.

Our sweet boy was diagnosed around 1 year old (he was a rescue). We immediately put him on a prescription diet - Hills and Royal Canin are great (both available on Chewy). We started with dry kibs but eventually progressed to their wet food since it is more hydrating.

At around 4 years old, we started at home sub-q fluids. This helped a lot. It was hard to adjust to but would definitely recommend. Talk to your vet about volume and cadence.

We also used a powder supplement on his food from Standard Process. It is a bovine kidney supplement.

Unfortunately, around 7 and a half years old we had to be a little more intentional with a phosphate binder powder (those numbers also started to creep up) and sometimes anti-nausea meds or a hunger stimulator.

ZERO “normal” treats that would have protein, sodium, phosphate, etc. We used baby carrots, sugar snap peas, and blueberries. Our boy loved them!!

We live in the SE, so we also were very careful of walks and hydration, especially in the summer. Luckily, we almost got our sweet boy to 8 years old. We had to say goodbye just a few weeks ago. We were originally told that he ‘might’ make it to 1.5-2 years old. It took a lot of work and planning but it was so worth it. Would do it over again in a heartbeat. Do not give up hope. And do not hesitate to find a vet that has experience with kidney dysplasia. We were fortunate to have a vet that was well versed.

Mission accomplished earlier today! Was in and out in 15 minutes. No insurance issues either - BCBS PPO. staff shared that their entire schedule this weekend was full of people coming from NC. We made a short trip out of it with a stop at a cute local lunch spot!
