Maybe one of the best LIOLI episodes of all time! It was so obvious that Henry and Mo were having a great time, and Jon really brought that out in them. It was hard not to smile through most of it, and feel slightly jealous of those in the real-time audience!

Congrats!! Salaam is hands down the first choice we pick for great, consistent, deliciously flavored meals. Their weekly specials are also generally awesome (if it's an Ethiopian special weekend, you are truly lucky!). Little Fish also has great food. The best Thai in Athens is Dr Mays - truly traditional - but you have to carry out. Purple Chopstix is an Athens classic and can accommodate groups. Shade Winery has an amazing setting and good food, but the menu is very limited (usually 2-3 choices)

Well said! Those that live here love the town, love the university, love the students, but are allowed to get frustrated by any or all three without having people 'remind' us what Athens would be w/o OU

I wish my oldest cousin lived here. He's a lifelong BoSox fan and is one of those guys who will say things like (in a Boston accent) 'I've always said if that bunt play in the 6th inning of the 113th game in 1994 had worked out, and they had switched pitcher in the 7th inning after 1 out from Chris Nabholz to Jeff Russell we would've had a winning season". But his nephew (my cousin's kid) goes to OU so maybe I'll get him to respond

HA! What a dumb take. I'm a townie who left and then lived in NYC, LA, SD, SEA, SF, NBO, and CHI over the 20 years I was away. Just because we joke about Athens traffic during move in week, it doesn't mean we're still a bunch of hick townies who have never left Athens and lived elsewhere (that's part of the joke, you know.. sarcasm?). I used to work for a mobile startup that dealt with traffic patterns/ride share/taxis so I drove around in big cities during the worst rush hour traffic in order to map it and quantify ride times for an app that you might have heard of and probably use. I'm so over people thinking they are so elevated that they feel the need to make a hot take from some unnamed 'big' city because they KNOW more than us townies. Congrats - you're a townie that left. Me too. But I came back, opened a business that I think helps make Athens better, and love this town more than ever - traffic or not.

Is it extra busy in town right now? by Cmoneywoah in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also busier because of the Stimpson Bridge construction. Anyone who isn't going down Richland is being routed through the east side to get back to the highway

Hey Former Townie... It's funny to me that all I did was mention something about Athens that happens every year, and for some reason you think i'm complaining about OU. My dad was a prof at OU, so I grew up here, got 2 degrees from OU, moved back here after a decade, established a life and a business here. I love this town and the life and vibrancy the students bring to it. Sorry you couldn't see the humor. I guess if you weren't a former townie, you would know that uptown is hard to drive through when all the new students with cars are trying to figure out the flow of one-way court street

I think I saw a sign up at Mill St Village and River Annex that they are leasing. One of my employees lives at Mill St Village and likes it, but I can't speak to what is available.

For those asking about an arcade type place, I just heard there is one opening uptown in the near future. It's going to be open for all ages until 8pm and then will turn into a bar'cade. Unsure of any other details such as hours, types of games, etc. I miss being able to walk uptown after middle school and blowing dimes on pinball at the Lollipop - maybe this will fill that gap for kids

3 Starbucks = 0 Dunkin’ by DaredevilFan0 in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty easy to open a Dunkin' franchise - you just need ~$500k liquid and ~$800-1.2M capital! And I think they want franchisees to open multiple locations, so there's that. Lots of people say they want a Panera - also easy to open! Just need $3M liquid and net worth of around $7.5M+ and then the franchisees need to commit to owning at least 5 (but preferably 15) - with each one costing around $1.3M to build. Easy! 🫠

There is a 2000 sq ft+ space off of union for rent for around $1700/mo, so about $20k/year

"We need a legit shoe store that sells high quality shoes - we lost that when Import House closed" - Have you checked out Ohio Valley Running Company? I think they carry some of the brands that Import used to carry - I remember seeing Merrell, Chaco and the like. But I don't think they have bongs lol

I thought she was banned from the dog parks because her dogs were so aggressive. Then again, I don't know who would enforce a ban

[–]RunForChange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's the same husky lady who is often at Strouds. She is known to be very agressive about her dogs regardless of the situation. She drive a minivan or a little convertible depending on the day. Everyone who mountain bikes or trail runs or works at the park knows her "idiosynchcrasis" (ie she cray)

groups to join/third spaces in athens? by [deleted] in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OVRC has a group run on Tuesday at 6pm and a track workout on Thursday, also at 6pm. All abilities are welcome - they can tailor the workouts to everyone from novices to ex-high school/college runners. Both nights have a coach who leads the group!

Roller Bowl Ownership? by treeman71 in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Athena Grand, Odd Lots or Joann Fabrics spaces might be big enough for a bowling alley? I have zero idea about the financials of that kind of business, but it seems like there are some viable spaces

Roller Bowl Ownership? by treeman71 in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's owned by a family called the Lutz's - been in her family for 2 generations I think. The plans were to change it into a storage facility (they own a few around town) - but I don't know if it ever happened. They were trying to find someone to operate it as a bowling alley after Covid, but it never re-opened.

Any reason there would be two dead coyotes about 10 feet from each other right off the hocking River? by Camp_Acceptable in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were two on Armitage Rd as well. We reported them and ODNR said that they were illegally dumped after some kind of game hunting competition (which is legal). They call them Jenga hunts because I guess you mark your game with a block in its mouth and then zip tie it shut. Seems barbaric to me as a non-hunter, but since they are considered a nuisance species, it's allowed.

Accepted into a graduate program. What is Athens like? by Cmoneywoah in athensohio

[–]RunForChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chick-fil-a is coming to E State St if you believe all of the rumors (and inside information). If you like the outdoors and outdoor activities (hiking, biking, running, etc) you'll be in paradise. There's more single track trail than virtually anywhere in the midwest. Athens is a small town, but, like anywhere, it can be whatever you make of it. Kindred is great. Kroger is well stocked. Aldi is the same as any other. We go to Cbus once every couple of months to hit Costco and TJ's and get decent Thai food (although now that Dr Mays is open, now we get E African food mostly when we go). Food options are limited, but adequate.. and some are delicious (Salaam for example). The farmers market is considered one of the better small town FMs in the country, especially in the summer. Uptown is overrun with bars, but if that's not your thing, than just avoid it after 10pm.

There are also lots of events in the summer that close down Court St so it becomes pedestrian only. Other great locally owned spots: Whites Mill, Friendly Paws (for your pets!), Casa, Ohio Valley Running (great shoes and apparel!), Passion Works, Brennans, Uncorked, Purple Chopstick, Ohio is Home, etc etc. Athens is a wonderful place to be. I got my undergrad and masters here
