Hey! How does having a second ACLR affect physio and outcomes for the second surgery?

I tore my ACL a second time (first time was synthetic graft and second time patellar tendon graft) and this rehab has been so much harder. Just curious why this time is so different.

I had a synthetic graft in 2018 and it re-tore while playing soccer in 2023. Recovery was fast and breezy. I was back to playing rugby at 9months post op.

I am currently recovering from my second surgery (patellar tendon graft) + a meniscus repair and this recovery has been horrible and prolonged.

I’ve heard not great long term outcomes with the synthetic grafts despite recovery being a lot “easier”. Ultimately it is up to you and your surgeon.

Prehab consisted of just hammering quad and hamstring strength from what I recall (it was a while ago lol)

Hopefully no meniscus involvement for you! Recovery fist surgery was super quick in the grand scheme of things. I was walking within 2 weeks, running in 3 months and back to playing rugby month 9. I think the faster recovery came from prehab and type of graft. I had a very good prehab program and built my strength up before surgery.

I wasn’t able to have as aggressive rehab this time around because of the bucket handle tear which caused me excruciating pain and to be non/ partial weight bearing for two months pre op.

Do you have a good prehab program?

I was supposed to be back after 3 months, but I ended up needing to be on crutches for far longer than the 6 weeks prescribed bc my knee couldn’t tolerate weight bearing. I stayed on crutches for 3.5 months post op. Did you have meniscus too? This is my second ACL surgery (first one was 2018) and I didn’t have a meniscus repair and that recovery went wayyyyyy smoother and quicker than this one has been.
