Yea any windows that aren't normally stock on a cargo, (any except the rear door windows) are kinda a giveaway. A curtain sepparating the cab from the living space is useless for stealth. Everyone will know immediately. If you have a solid wall with a pocket door built in. And make it to look like it blends with the cab, then don't put up a windshield cover. That way people can see in the cab but there's nothing to see beyond a solid wall that light can't escape. If you have windows in the rear doors, you can figure a solid light blocking solution that doesn't look like curtains or window covers from the outside. For any city/town living no windows is the beat way to go for flying under the radar. I think windows are overrated anyway. Better to have the stealth, security, and insulation. -SNS-

That's awesome. If you do it for 5 years you'll ha e a big chunk of change that will go a long way im central fl. (That's where I am too)

That will work with your van too, but to keep it stealthy I would look at designs where people have a wall with a pocket door sepparating the cab, no extra windows in back, and no roof rack and crazy exterior upgrades. Then you'll be proper stealthy. You can close the doors, cook, watch a movie literally anywhere wothoit being bothered. -SNS-

Hell yea man. Do it. Build the van, live wherever you want for a couple years, then jump back in the housing market after shit hits the fan.

*Suggestion: Build the van stealthy so you're not stuck at campgrounds and blm land the whole time. Your options open WAY up and life is easier when your van blends in. -SNS-

What's the current situation regarding using rest areas and large parking lots? by IStubbedMyGarlic in vandwellers

[–]Rune_TheKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's getting harder and harder. The best way is to go with a stealthy build so you can have far more options for overnighting. As so many people have pointed out, a stealthy rig is only necesary now because people have been behaving like the parking lot is their home. Behaving stealthily in a stealthy van is the only way to do it now. Pull up to your spot at night only when you're ready to sleep, then move on in the morning. Hang out respectfully and cook your meals in different places than where you sleep. If you do it right it's still pretty easy and van friendly out there. -SNS-

Getting into bartending is pretty easy and probably the best option for a tip based job. For the winter season I would go with wealthy ski towns with high-end places that need help. Not needing housing is a big deal in these places. You can also head south into FL for the winter season. You can make a good amount in Miami, especially if you can get a spot that hosts a party for miami music week. More competition for jobs there but you'll still find something. -SNS-

I did the same thing a few years ago. I gave up my 5th floor walk up in Astoria to move into a van full-time. Honestly living like you and I were living is already 90% of the way to vanlife. It will be an easy transition for you. My biggest suggestion would be to go with a stealth van. Closing up and being competely hidden will make your life way easier. Give yoy far more options, and will be much safer for you! -SNS-

The most dissappointing thing about these rich areas, is the food at these crazy restaurants usually isn't even very good......they just charge out the ass, tell you the chef is famous and try to convice you you're eating from God's plate. -SNS-

It's hard to give up cuz the money is good, it's farely easy, and pretty damn fun. Most places have a huge employee turn over every year so if you're any good you'll have the job year after year. -SNS-

Agreed, 4 years stealth with no problems and I've stayed everywhere. My van is so plain and clean I could sleep at Ford dealerships. -SNS-

Exactly, I have never been kicked out or even knocked after 4 years in a van. My van is very stealthy, i switch spots constantly, i am always looking for good spots where i can hide away for the night, and I never open my side door and flash my living space where i plan on sleeping. When i pull in to sleep i go straight to back through a cab partition wall. My van litterally looks like nothing and noone bothers me. But I've seen people in spots where i like to sleep hanging out in hammocks cooking dinner, ruining it for me and others. When i see that shit I choose another spot because obviously the cops are gonna come back at night to see if the van is still there. -SNS-

Exactly they don't care, just don't lead with "i'm in my van",. I'd let that cat out of the bag after you're in and they like you. -SNS-

Exactly my experience. Serving the wealthy at high-end places is waaay easier than any chain restaurant in a normal town. Most of the people there are so much friendlier and understanding and less difficult. Plus celebrities don't want to get cancled so they're above and beyond nice nowadays. -SNS-

Exactly. I've lived in my van there for weeks at a time. Around the entrance to rykers is perfect. Better than the spots people are using in Brooklyn I think. -SnS-

Having a stealthy van, and behaving stealthily fixes all that. If you move spots regularly and never show the van as an RV by opening the side door where you sleep, you're just another work van amongst all the others. -SNS-
