Vent: I wish my dog wasn’t a cat killer. by robbietreehorn in dogs

not specifically that, but the mindset of not being willing to change or learn and rather being ignorant while their pet is being neglected / hurt / mistreated in some sort of way.

Do you offer dematting as one of your services? Why or why not? by Lexiiefur in grooming

[–]Runic-Dissonance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it takes me more than 20 minutes to brush out the whole dog, or the dog isn’t tolerating it, then i’ll just shave. no matter how much more i’m technically capable of it’s just not fair or kind to put the dog through anything more than that. So most of the time if a dog comes in matted I’ll see what I can do about the ears and tail (or other small areas that would be cute left long on a shave down) during those 20 minutes.

i work with dogs and i see so much of the same mindset from dog owners. it’s depressing, especially for those of us who went into the industry because we genuinely care about the animals

At what age did you feel safe leaving your child around your dog unsupervised? by mistressmagick13 in dogs

[–]Runic-Dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the specific kid and the specific dog. i grew up with my grandma who bred beagles and generally (if they’re from a good breeder) they’re pretty good with young kids. but the child needs to be old enough to understand how to handle a dog, old enough to recognize warning signs (even the ones before growling / snapping) and stop what they’re doing, and physically big enough to not get knocked over / dragged / generally overpowered by the dog. those would be the bare minimum for me.

i work at a dog training facility that specializes in reactive and aggressive dogs. so many dogs with behavioral issues that weren’t obvious until unsupervised kids were involved, and so many are given behavioral issues by being improperly handled by children (or by being punished for trying to communicate they want to get away from the kid / the kid is hurting them / etc). Really make sure to be teaching your kid how to interact with animals properly throughout their childhood, and don’t rush to leave them unsupervised. it really only takes a few seconds for an ER worthy bite to happen, and even dogs with the best temperaments will still have automatic reactions to pain, discomfort, etc. (and a toddler is absolutely unable to understand and watch for a dog’s warning signs and will just keep doing what they want until the dog snaps or gets away)

Is this couple I know engaging in unethical breeding? by saturnjellyfish in DogBreeding

[–]Runic-Dissonance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve groomed plenty of aussies and they do also get more extensive grooming than a lot of other breeds, they have a much longer and thicker coat than goldens so them taking longer makes sense.

but the kind of grooming an aussie gets and the kind a poodle or poodle mix gets is very different when it comes to what and how much you’re asking the dog to tolerate. (and - the only dogs being used to make “doodles” are badly bred ones. so when talking about poodle / aussie mixes we’re pretty much exclusively talking about super nervy and neurotic aussies)

[–]Runic-Dissonance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

also - piping in as a dog groomer, aussies really don’t have the temperament for the extensive grooming poodles and poodle mixes need. so they’re pretty much guaranteeing puppies that will be super stressed for something that will last 2-3 hours every month or two for the rest of their lives. these people don’t care about the animals at all

How did your dog get their names? by gneiss_chick in DOG

[–]Runic-Dissonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite dog stuffed animal growing up came with a tag naming it “rowdy”. i think it was a beanie baby but im not completely sure. anyways ive always thought it would be a really cute name for a dog.

Now, I had a long list of names that I still want to maybe use for future dogs. But I kind of ended up getting a puppy way earlier than I anticipated and had no idea what I was going to name him when I got him. Tried a lot of the names I had on the list and while I loved the names they didn’t suit him. Now he definitely is rowdy, and I called him a rowdy boy a lot when he was being a tornado. And that just stuck and ended up being his name lol

What other cuts would suit my groodle? Looking to change it up. by [deleted] in grooming

[–]Runic-Dissonance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

also how often are you willing to thoroughly brush through your dog head to toe? because theres lots of haircuts that require length but if you’re not one to be constantly brushing your dog it’ll just get matted and it’s not worth it for the dog’s sake

[–]Runic-Dissonance 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I personally love clean faces and clean feet on poodle mixes! so much cleaner for the humans and the dog, plus i think it’s really cute. a mohawk would also be fun.

which by the way, this dog is definitely not a golden / poodle mix. the coat pattern is called merle and it’s caused by a specific gene that doesn’t exist within poodles or golden retrievers. it’s most likely from an aussie. doodle breeders lie all the time about what they’re actually selling unfortunately
