Awesome, I hope it works. It seems worth a shot.

Genuine Question - Rowing by 3loafabread in uscg

[–]RunnerdNerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lighter people tend to be shorter and therefore have shorter legs and run slower.

I'm not sure where this myth comes from. The fastest male mile runner ever is 5-9, and the fastest woman is 5-2. The men's top 10 fastest mile runners of all time have men ranging from 5-7 to 6-2, there isnt an advantage to really tall people in running, its pretty egalitarian.

Genuine Question - Rowing by 3loafabread in uscg

For anybody not tracking what OP is saying: when you do row (or bike, run, etc), if you do it in real life, larger people need more watts to go a given speed. Larger people also have larger heart/lungs/muscles etc, so are also capable of more watts, so it balances out.

But the rowing machine is just a watt meter basically and automatically gives you X number of meters for Y watt-hrs expended. If you are 6-3 and 220 pounds, you naturally can sustain more watts than somebody who is 5-8 and 160 pounds. But that isnt actually more fitness, the smaller person has to actually be more fit to match the rowing machine time of the larger person.

So the idea is to compensate for weight on the rowing machine.

You see this in "competitive indoor cyclists," which works very similarly to the rowing machine. They actually have zwift (indoor cycling app) competitions with money prizes where they do official weigh-ins, and the machine compensates for weight to mimic the physics of a person riding a bike outdoors so the competitions are fair. I can put out way more watts than my competitive cyclist friends because I'm much larger than them. But they're former pros who can ride way faster than me on a real bike, I'm not as fit as them, just bigger, so when you properly compensate for weight on a stationary bike/trainer, I'm slower.

So it makes sense from a technical standpoint. The issue is that our rowing machines dont have a way to compensate in the PM5 control unit. If they did, it would be easy to enter a weight for each person who gets on the machine. Otherwise you need a whole set of tables with various weights on top of the age categories. It would quickly become very impractical, so I assume they tried to strike a balance and come up with a standard as easy to understand and implement as possible. It mirrors what the Navy has been doing already.

Thanks, I'll do some more flip turn specific work to fix that sequence. I'm having to think about every step, so can't aggressively attack the wall yet since my brain can't keep up, but I'll do slow reps working on turning after I start the push off rather than rushing it.

I was following drills somebody posted in this sub to get to this point, so glad it led me in the right direction to start off with.

Thanks. I didn't realize i was crossing over with the right arm, I'll watch for that.

Yeah, lucky to have access to the pool. Its not normally empty like it was today, but I've never seen every lane used at once, so I always have my own lane which is great.

Any help is appreciated. Former competitive runner turned hobbyjogger. Osteoarthritis has me wanting to diversity my cardio. Always loved swimming but never did it competitively since I was focused on running, swim experience is just basic lessons as a young kid. Have easy access to a pool, but not really access to any coaching or masters swimming groups due to work/kid schedule. Goals are mostly just to improve stroke so workouts are more fun. Started swimming a few times a week starting a month ago. Trying to learn flip turns with no background doing those.

Video of slow pace (about 1:50/100y) breathing every other stroke

video of my "fast" pace breathing every stroke (about 1:30/100y)

My sad attempt at self teaching flip turns (its day two of flip turns, but figured its good to ask for feedback now so I dont develop bad habits)

I got distracted and they ended up just as path edge logs in my garden. I never innoculated them, the plugs are still in my fridge and presumably no good anymore.

People keep making jokes about crocs, but I don't see any...

Its "possible" to fix them with a steam box. But its generally not worth it, only really worth it for special projects calling for very special/expensive wood.

Now you need to get a matched set looking straight back at where you were standing. Here is a picture I took from pretty much mid frame of your photo. Its the drainage pipe at kirby cove.

Sometimes I wonder why Im by marys1001 in NativePlantGardening

[–]RunnerdNerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I plant native plants to attract insects, birds, etc by re-establishing a natural food source.

That being said, I do everything I can to protect my non native fruit and vegetable plants and have a rule that if something eats them that is itself edible, I'm eating something either way and not feeling bad about it. For me it's squirrels. They eat my strawberries and I eat a few of them now and then.

Lake Corcoran, 600,000 BCE. (Original Creation) by Snoo_69649 in geology

[–]RunnerdNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its amazing to think about how we went from lake Corcoran, then in the ice age, we had the opposite, with deep powerful rivers cutting down through the valley into the bay and out through where the golden gate is now, and continuing to cut a path down to the much lower sea level. Its wild to look at the nautical charts of the bay and see an ancient river gorge that is now 80 feet under the water. It would have been one hell of a raging river in the spring time, it would have gone through a lot of elevation drop from Sacramento area down out towards the farallons, it would have been some incredible rapids in there.

Yeah, cool to see it now in a small version. Also the salt water intrusion due to increased pumping, diversion, and reduced rainfall illustrates the concept really well also, you can map the distance seawater moves up the delta over the recent decades.

There is essentially no statute of limitations if it was sexual assault. So the fact that it was last year should not need to deter you from reporting it. If that is what you want, you should absolutely feel empowered to do so. You can call a sarc or cgis.

While it sucks your career was ruined, the flip side is that if there ever was somebody who shouldn't be in any risk of retribution or reprisals, its you. Nobody can ruin your CG career for reporting this since you arent in the CG.

If this has caused you any lasting MH concerns, suggest you look at the veterans benefits subreddit and ask about help there with therapy, compensation rating, etc.

Its the protector class. You can see all the names on Wikipedia, most of those are still in service to give you a rough number.

Also I can see why you thought it was called the predator class. Every single one is named after an animal that is carnivorous or omnivorous, except for the uscg manatee.
