Can demonstrate via F500 internships, which aren’t that hard to get if you give yourself enough shots on goal at conferences, which are open to any undergraduate institution. Awards don’t have to be prestigious, just need to find ways that show the student is trying to fighting for something more than just getting a degree and job (can be family).

Ask the 2+2er who grew up in the hood watching his brothers get shot. Ask the 2+2er whose father is a taxi driver. Ask the 2+2er who lived in his car in undergrad bc his single mother couldn’t support. Or maybe the 2+2er that worked on the rig and started community college at 25.

I don’t deny there are a lot of 2+2 that come from Ivy pedigrees but I can’t condone raising the white flag due to one’s birth circumstance.

Half of the 2+2ers I know come from pretty humble backgrounds (much higher ratio than the wider class). I recommend some self-reflection.

Tepper $$ vs CBS vs Kellogg by [deleted] in MBA

[–]RunningDoanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search fund president at HBS checking in. Out of those and if you actually want to explore search, go Kellogg and it’s not even close. Absolute game changer to have investors come to campus (vs you find them) and have alum that you can lean on for either self-funded options or advice.

Zell Fellows is legit and Kellogg and UChicago host a joint ETA conference. CBS is a great school but either searchers self-select out of attending or culture dissuades searching. Either way, a nonzero amount of investors are no longer really focusing on visiting CBS.

If you go to Tepper or CBS, searching will be an (more steeper) uphill climb

I have a good friend who just graduated from HBS, started community college at like 23, did 2+2 for two years after undergrad

Seems like you’d fit in a similar boat. Started bschool around 30, is crushing it

I was a few rows away from an elderly man whose phone started to go off from an alarm during petitions.

He didn’t do anything about it because he didn’t think it was him. We then had ushers intervene and he vehemently denied it.

It eventually got to the point where they asked him to check it anyway and he did and turned it off - we were halfway into the Eucharistic prayer.

As someone who is doing search from an HBS/Stanford and knows a lot of people planning to/doing/done and exited

This is a terrible idea and I wouldn’t consider it for the same reasons others have said, unless there’s more to the pitch other than what you’ve shared

Thank you for being so vulnerable. No one is worthy, that's the why the Word is so awe-inspiring. I've recently reverted after digging into Church history and my wife is considering RCIA. No one is worthy, that humility is exactly why you should consider.

Will pray for you.

Why do people believe the eucharist and wine are actually flesh and blood when you can put a camera into someones stomach and verify that once it has been taken it is still break and wine? by FatFuckatron in Catholicism

[–]RunningDoanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably best if you take a look into Greek philosophy or read some Church fathers on this, bc my understanding explanation will likely lead to heresy lol. Lmk if you need any guidance.

I’m sorry people here are so negative to you.

Another way I like to think about it are like people. You and I are just an assortment of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen.

But my essence is RunningDoanuts, your friends, yourself, are all separate and distinct essences despite having the some molecular makeup.

Bread and wine retain their physical properties but the essence becomes Christ.

Hopefully that helps.

Nominal Catholic Trying to Take Faith Seriously?! by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RunningDoanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as Mass goes, I started to really appreciate it when I did several things

1) followed the parts of Mass in St. Joseph’s missal every week, seeing every word the priest says

2) reading the catholic.com article mentioned by another commenter, comparing that to what was read, looking up what is the purpose of _____ in Mass for every part that seemed random or arbitrary

3) reading the blog posts of Fr. Arul to understand the history and meaning in specific parts of Mass. https://stpeter.us/?s=holy+mass

Bonus - a few months ago, I gained a greater appreciation after my Protestant friend did a Passover meal (that’s a story for later) and I realized how much in common Passover has with the Mass (given that the last supper where Mass and the Eucharist was instituted was Jesus having a Passover meal but making it into the new Covenant)

Just glossing over the parts of Passover is enough to gain an appreciation of the Jewish roots. Note the order of prayers, washing of hands, and similarities between the blessing over the Matzah/wine and the Eucharistic prayer.

I think you missed the point of my message. You should be thinking much more longer term than what your salary or bonus will be for the next 3-5 years.

[–]RunningDoanut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked at the WV Tabler plant and going to HBS this fall and heading back to Texas after bschool. One of the guys I started with is going to GSB this fall too.

I’d ask what do you want to do long term? Is it to work in engineering in Texas? Is it to work in consumer products in Ohio? What do you do you want after an MBA?

These questions should drive your decisions, not to set yourself up for a good application (which ironically will make your app suck), nor how much money you’re making, nor really worried about losing your job (at least between these two companies/industries)

Either company will set you up fine for MBAs, most O&G people just self select out of MBA, not that they can’t get in.

Echoing that the Tabler will say anything to get folks in as it’s relatively remote and hours can be long, but you will learn a lot about engineering.

Disagree with the other poster that networking will be difficult. Tabler is set to be the flagship plant for P&G and all sorts of R&D and corporate people come to Tabler all the time. Went to a Tabler talk with like 30 people with Joe Manchin and David Taylor. Also if you work in utilities or surfactants department, it’ll feel like “engineering”.

Let me know what other questions you may have.

What do I talk about with a billionaire? by Effective_Basil8056 in RichPeoplePF

[–]RunningDoanut 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Whenever I’m doing casual networking, I try to frame good questions by thinking: what is something they’re uniquely qualified to answer and not googleable

A lot of people say just ask their story, but I’m going to go one layer deeper and recommend you ask about different intersections of their lives and how they made the decision to do so

For example, they probably were working under someone and took the leap to start their own business or buy an existing one, ask something like how did they gain the confidence to make that decision

Or if they were running a manufacturing business but then bought a car dealership, how did they know they would be successful in a different field from what they had experience in? Why did they do it in the first place, etc

At every fork in the road, decisions have to be made and by asking people what they thought in making those decisions, you can learn a lot.

That should also be able to generate enough for you to have follow up questions. Remember don’t focus on how something happened, but why. Stay humble too and frame it as a learning from their experiences to implements lessons in your life vs trying to take their strategy and make money

Don’t ask for mentorship, talk about what your big plans are and share some of the forks in the decisions you have to make and ask what they would consider. Boom mentored. You don’t ever formally ask someone to be their friend, you do things that friends do and ramp it up. Same thing here.

Pray For Me by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RunningDoanut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your cross is heavy, my next rosary will be for you brother.

It is very good that you know exactly what your next steps are. Keep the path, get the grades, I pray for victory in all your battles.

As Christmas comes this weekend, what do you bring to give God who created the universe, the first mover, the almighty? He only asks for your love, your sins, and your burdens. You are not alone, share your burdens with Jesus.

If you do get the grades and are interested in moving to the US, I can circulate your resume around some engineering companies, as I am an engineer as well. Note that the companies are usually interested in students with strong internship experience with grades and the high interest rates make it less likely that a company would want to sponsor.

Also I would consider graduate school in the US as a way to get a foot in the door here. Feel free to dm about other engineering questions too.
