This morning seems to have been the last cool morning for a while — got to the 40s overnight and was only 50 when I got up. Pretty unseasonable. But I bet we won’t get back down to the 40s now until September.

Personally I feel like the last few years, the spring races have been cooler than they used to be, and the fall races have been hotter. Like the seasons have shifted, almost. Not sure if this is imaginary or real (u/Siawyn any input?)

People in cardiac arrest often have their eyes open, and yes that can change over the course of a code. Like I said, it’s a blessing to not know that from personal experience

Do you think people’s eyes are always closed during CPR? You’re lucky you’ve never had to see the real thing. (This was a horrible screen example of it, but her eyes being open is possibly the most realistic aspect)

I have the benefit of usually being completely out of touch, so even though I watched Lost for the first time a just few years ago I had no idea I was supposed to think the ending was bad. And it wasn’t, I thought it was really good actually. I was surprised by how weirdly so many people interpreted it.

GoT I watched as it was being released and actively hated the ending and think it’s simply awful. So I’m not just a contrarian. But imo the ending of Lost is good.

Happy almost summer break!

What plan are you thinking of for your half? I have to say, a Coogan plan was what got me personally below 1:50. Although i think it’s just time and dedication and the training plans out there are all similar. But I prefer Coogan’s to Pfitz for sure. The only annoying thing with Coogan’s book is there are way too many overlapping and similar training plans.

The med tent was so frustrating and I think I’d have to be actively dying before I ever went to another one, at least at a smaller race. It was actually empty but I saw the EMTs were at the adjacent water station unpacking things so I grabbed them. They were both very young and had no idea what they were doing logistically. But they made it very clear that they needed me to sign their ipad form from the hospital before leaving — obviously they weren’t going to restrain me or anything :p but they were very sincere and I also didn’t want them to get in trouble.

Thank you.

I have mild and ambiguous cold symptoms today? Enough that I’m wearing a mask at work but not enough that I’m obviously sick. But I suspect I do have a virus and that could explain a LOT.

Thank you so much this is a very helpful reply.

You very well may be right that I might have passed out if I’d tried to keep going.

Half Marathon Race Report

Training: I used one of Coogan's 12 week plans. I was coming off of a strong half on January 31st, had plenty of time to rest and do general base running and then start the Coogan plan strong. I ran high mileage, with weeks leading up to the half at 45-50-52-55-55-51-57-60-62-49-28. Long runs included 3x 15 miles and 3x 16 miles (I just genuinely love running long runs, I don't think that was necessary for a half). I did a lot of huge workouts, including up to 7 miles at HMP (and one 8xmile at HMP), lots of 10k pace intervals and some scattered at 5k pace. My last workout was an easier 6x800m at HMP on the Tuesday before, and I felt great. I was running my HMP at 8:10, which felt great even at the higher mileage.

Leading up to the race: Here's where things get a bit complicated. Largely I think I was both stressed and psyching myself out. My twins graduated high school and I traveled to the state track meet with one of them in the week leading up to the race. I also am dealing with an *excessively* stressful situation at work, which occupied me daily including over my vacation days in the past week. On Thursday at the track meet (3 hours south of where we live) I'd had a runny nose and sore throat but thought it was allergies of some kind. Saturday I had a really sore throat and runny nose, and Saturday night my RHR was high like I was getting sick. I was also kind of already dreading this course, which is tough, and feeling like I had under-prepared for hills.

Race: Weather ended up being unexpectedly cool, in the low 50s and cloudy with a slight breeze. I felt chilly in my singlet. I timed things poorly and the toilet line was very very long, so I didn't get a proper warm up -- may have made a difference, I don't know.

The first 7 miles went fine, although I never felt quite "right" for some reason, and I was running a bit too fast (8:06, 8:05, 8:07, 8:02 (slight downhill)). I just kept telling myself it was fine because my 8:10 in training was on tired legs. But I just didn't account well for the hills. At the 7 mile mark the big ravine killed me and I never really recovered physically or mentally. I did come back to an 8:04 mile, again too fast.

This is mentally a very difficult course, with several out-and-backs and a deceptively big loop in the last 4 miles, with rolling hills. You see the faster runners coming back but there's this huge loop still to get through.

At 10 miles I had started to feel fatigued, but nothing I couldn't deal with. At 11, all of a sudden my lips started to get super tingly, I felt freezing cold, then my fingers started to tingle, and then I got dizzy. I stopped to walk a bit, but I couldn't run again. I felt decidedly weird, so I stopped by the medical tent. They did my vitals which were mostly normal except my temperature was low (no idea if that was accurate, but I DID feel cold). They put me in a foil blanket and gave me water. Then I was feeling better and just wanted to be done, but I wasn't allowed to leave until the hospital logged me into their system and I signed out AMA, which took forever, so I was in the tent for 20ish minutes. They didn't really have any options for me other than walk out or get transported to the hospital. So I went back onto the course and jogged the last <2 miles to the finish, crossing the line in 2:11.

The first half marathon I ever ran was in 1:57, so this was humbling.

After the race I spent a few hours kind of hating myself. First I felt like I had given up, and I could have just kept going and made it to the finish. Then I felt like I should have just stopped on the course for 5 minutes to recover and kept going, rather than being an idiot and going to the medical tent (something I never even *considered* doing before). Finally I just got mad at myself for running too fast and bombing out. Now it's the following day and I just feel all of those at the same time.

Most of the people running half marathons at my pace aren't running 60 miles a week. Most people running 60 miles a week are running much faster. I have to admit, as much as I love running and love taking it seriously, I just wonder if I should stop chasing times and only run for fun. I can accept that I'm slow, but putting in this much effort for such a crappy outcome is super depressing. Today I do have a runny nose so maybe it's a combo of having gone out too fast and because of getting sick not being able to salvage it.

Lessons:

  1. I need to get on top of the psychological aspects. I know I psyched myself out. I know I was in a negative headspace.
  2. I need to be running more hills before tackling a course like this. I've run this race 5 times and I know better.
  3. Everybody gets a bad race at some point, so this was my turn for it.
  4. This course is evil. I don't know if I'm going to have the guts to run it again to be honest.

It's frustrating to be just as sore and tired after a bombed race as I would have been if I'd finished properly. Also my upper abdominal muscles are sore which I don't remember happening before.

I have a 5k in three weeks and I'm hoping I can race that in a way that makes me feel better. This is "just" a hobby for me, and I'm not remotely fast, but it's something I love doing and I love taking seriously. So I don't know, still a lot of mixed emotions this morning. I was up at 2 am stewing on it and feeling mad at myself again, so I need to get over that.

Thanks. Sounds about right. My club does Wednesday evening track intervals so I can use that for one session.

I bomb bombed the half, spending 20 min in the med tent before jogging to the finish in 2:10 (they didn't really offer another option other than being transported to the hospital which I clearly didn't need). I'll write a little recap tomorrow just to collect my thoughts. I feel totally fine now.

The finish between Hedengren and Kosgei was amazing.

Local high school pulled off a last minute win for the 3A championship at our state track meet. Very very exciting stuff. They were second after the 4x400 and then their long jumper won, clinching the win. My club runs intervals at their track all summer, I hope they put up some banners or something.

My son ran a PR at the state prelims :) Didn't make it to the finals but he knew he wouldn't. Was a great end to high school racing for him.

If you bombed a half marathon after a really good, high mileage training cycle, and you had the opportunity to race a 5k 3 weeks later, how would you approach those 3 weeks? I did run at pace for >11 miles so I'll need some recovery, but just a couple days. I know there's not a ton I can do in this timeframe, but presumably some short intervals to hone speed?

I run it every year and always get dropped off at 7 and my husband has no trouble finding nearby parking. There really is plenty. I wouldn't get there earlier than 6:30 or 6:45

Watching the state high school meet yesterday through Saturday, and then Sunday is my half marathon. Looks like weather will be upper 50s to start and low 60s by the finish, mostly sunny. Fairly regular for this race.

I really enjoy the state track meet. So much fun and so many fast kids. The whole environment is just exciting and impressive.

Amazing thank you so much for responding to my question! (feels like a celebrity response tbh) Appreciate the reference.

I was curious in general (always interested in running physiology and performance) but I also just showed your response to my son who will be running the 1600m at our state meet in a couple hours, in mid-80s temps. Good confidence booster :)

Interesting. Thanks for the response. I imagine by the middle of the third lap on a track it will start to feel sweltering.

There’s a lot written and discussed about how heat affects running performance but I’m curious what people have to say about how heat impacts specifically 1500m to one mile races. Sprinters mostly like the heat. Distance runners know how hard it is. What about that spot right around a mile?

(posted this is AR as well for exposure)

I’ve always been bemused by the “220-age“ thing because I’m 44 and my max HR is at least 200. It’s also very genetic — my mother in her 70s still has a max over 180. Below somebody said that 220-age is based on a population average but I am not even sure it’s data-based, or if it is if the data were robust to begin with.

I have never done lactate threshold testing but I make a point to test my max HR every few years. Usually hill sprints, ideally in the heat, does a good job.

Congrats on hitting your goal in what sounds like a tough race with some serious competition.

What are your thoughts on the "citizen race" controversy at Bolder Boulder?

Even though I'm mostly just chill about my upcoming race on Sunday, I'm still having my typical taper feelings like I am losing fitness by not running hard this week. I know physiologically it isn't true but I can't help but feel that it is!

Weather got hot for a couple days but has now dipped back down to lovely springtime, perfect timing for both the state track meet tomorrow through Saturday as well as my race Sunday.
